I don't recommend doing this in most situations, but this is what I did when my computer bugged itself to Hell and back: I installed XP over an old XP installation. This isn't a good long-term solution, but it should give you enough usability to back up your stuff. Admittedly, I am still using the same XP installation about 3 weeks after I installed it over the last one, and error-free. Only problems I have had are when I didn't delete an old program before I reinstalled it.
