The reason the V5 isn't really hackable is because it runs VxWorks, with very minimal hardware. You can though get the WRT54G-5L which runs linux.
I would advise you to look at the following two sites for help with the V5 router. With version 5, you can run DD-WRT micro and the second site below seems to have all of that information.
