Beretta M9 was a good, viable gun for GI Joe. All metal (alum / steel), idiot proof operation, minimal maintenance required to make it work, horrendous DA trigger pull prevents actual accuracy (much like the M16/M4, and unlike its pistol predecessor the M1911), too big and heavy to lose, and made by the lowest bidder. The magazines made by "Checkmate" (something like that) Industries were complete shit.

Smart Joes bought a lot aftermarket mags for their guns and comfy holsters.

I can imagine that plastic handguns wouldn't be all that great for general military service in the US. Joe breaks 'em because Joe doesn't really respect his weapon all that much. (huge philosophy rant could come of this)

Seeing as how I was a unit armorer for a couple of years... I know this as true.

...

Beretta did a decent job with "updating" the aging 92 franchise with the Vertec. I like the Vertec grip better (with gloves) and the light rail is a necessary "bling bling" addition.

...

I still can't believe that we still use 9mm in military sidearms. Rifle caliber pistols (Bushmaster Carbon-15 that takes AR mags) or pistols with rifle-powered rounds (5.7x28 like the FN Five-seveN) need to make an appearance. We're still essentially using handgun philosophy from the '60s.
