Gimp is a freeware, cross-platform alternative to something like Photoshop. It doesn't have nearly as many features, but the basic functionality is there.
And while Filezilla is a good free FTP solution, Mac users might want to try
Cyberduck--if not for the quality, then at least for the name. And, yes, there really is a duck.
