Well, I've used IE forever (with a few switches here and there for a day to test some others)...

But in the last week or so I've tried a bunch of others seriously looking for an alternative, and so far~

Opera: you have to buy it (if you dont wanna banners) how lame... so I cracked it... I liked it alot cause you can move all the retarded icons around and delete most of them, so I could duplicate the google bar that IE has. I don't like tabbed browsing, at all, and when I would shift click even with tabbed browing off, sometimes it would tab it, sometimes it wouldnt, ugh. Also, didn't support some flash/other plugins I believe.

Mozilla: Using this now, but its annoying the hell out of me. Is there a way to change the special keys a broswer uses? First of all, I can find a way to duplicate a google bar, I kind of got over it though -- I now hit Control+L to goto the address bar, then I do "gg goat sex" and gg is a keyword I put in for google. But my biggist irk I shift-clicking a link tries to save it, I am so used to opening new windows with that, that I'm about to go back to IE.

So, any suggestions? I tried Phoenix to but its basically the same as Mozilla imo.

Stuff I need:
*some form of an easy search
*some form of a sidebar for bookmarks (I bookmark browse heavily)
*compatability with flash, etc
*no banners!
*fast
*shift-click opening a new broswer window, prefferably
*no goddamn tabbed browsing

I love mozilla, personally, I've been running is since like .91

I'm not sure why you couldn't find the sidebar, Mozilla has a very configurable one, just hit F9 to bring it up.

I love tabbed browsing, although i didn't see the point at first. For TFP, for example, it's great to follow a forum down to a thread down to an offsite link and have everything organized in tabs.

You're the first person I've seen who actually hated tabbed browsing.

Phoenix is fast and also has a Google bar, IIRC. I think it's also compatible with Flash and Shockwave.

Do you know a way to change keys? This shift-click save-target is whats killing me

Tabbed-browsing might be good if I got used to it, but I like having a spam of broswers on my taskbar cause I can find them by name there, while I'm doing something else outside the browser, and I'm so used to alt-tabbing that it takes me 3 minutes to find the tab I lost.

I just use CTRL left-click to open a new tab. If you use as many windows/tabs as you say, I hope you have about a GB of RAM

You can also use CTRL+TAB when Mozilla is in the front to cycle through tabs.

Yeah I'm just saying I'm used to alt-tab, and I'm used to the same thing I use for browser to work in windows, so I control-tab a while then want to goto Explorer and I want to punch my computer :P

Ok, Ok, I'm trying tabbed, so how do I close a tab im in with the keyboard?

CTRL+W closes a tab. You'll find a bunch of shortcuts listed in the File, Edit and View menus.

If you were using Linux, I'd recommend <a href="http://galeon.sf.net/">Galeon</a>, which uses the Mozilla rendering engine. Otherwise, take a look at Phoenix (or whatever they're renaming it to) on http://www.mozilla.org/. It's Mozilla-based, but light-weight and has some cool features that you won't see in IE for some time, like type-ahead search.

I looked at Galeon (also run a linux computer next to this one, currently using Mozilla there also), as a user, what do you think seperates it from others?

And the Firebird (Phoenix) browser was nice but I didn't see a reason not to use Mozilla, neither of my computers are having trouble running a browser :P

fracturedmind: For one, it has smart bookmarks, which go in the bookmarks menu or the toolbar. Basically, you have, say, a Google smart bookmark, and it'll say "Google" and have a text box. Type whatever you want there, hit enter, and it'll search google for it.

I use that feature for searching on various places, for dictionary lookups, and other things.

It also has tabbed browsing. I know it's not the only browser with that, but it's still really nice.

It has mouse gestures. Opera has this as well.

The cookie, password, and image blocking support is really nice and easy to use. Anti-popup support. Two clicks to turn off Java, JavaScript, popups, images.

It's not like a revolutionary browser, but it has many nice features, a nd imho, it's worth playing around with.

I use MyIE2 , it's just a shell for Internet Explorer but incorporates the features of other browsers like tabbed pages, anti-popup, mouse gestures, seriously tons of features. Very simple, looks good, I love it.

I use mozilla

A little tip for searching for you fractured mind, or anybody really. An easy way to search google is to just start typing in your search term in the address bar, and instead of showing you websites like when you type in an address, it will show you "search google for *" .. just hit down and enter.

I have been using Opera lately and enjoying it a lot.

The only qualms I have with it are that sometimes plugins don't work properly (I have to manually copy over to the plugin directory), and occasionally a page will look different than intended.

I downloaded Mozilla to check it out, and it seems to be identical to Netscape Communicator, minus the logo in the top right corner.

Am I missing something? (I assume I am).

What makes this browser so superior to others, and why am I seeing what seems to be an exact replica of Netscape Communicator. Do I have to change a setting or option to "unleash" the power of Mozilla?

I am not hating, I am just curious about this browser, as I have heard a lot of hype here and elsewhere, but I don't think I am using it to it's potential.

I downloaded Mozilla 1.3 for Windows.

Any help or feedback would be great, as I want to give Mozilla a serious try, before going back to Opera.

Also, are there "mods" for Windows (like Firebird), that make the browser "Better"?

Looks like != Functions the same

Tab browsing is where you have a single window but you can open a tab, which is just another window INSIDE the main window. You click the tab to go back and forth between the two sites in the same window.

I use this for easier organization, forums in one, prjects stuff in another etc...

Galeon is great because if it goes down for some reason, the next time it comes up it asks you if you want to restore or discard you're previous session. Then if you restore it, you're at almost the exact same point as before it went down (all tabs/windows open to the same pages).

Well, Netscape is based off Mozilla, so obviously its going to look the same. The difference is that mozilla is the first to get the new features, then Netscape will have them in its next release. Also mozilla doesn't come with as much stuff in it as netscape.

There is a windows version of phoenix/firebird. You can find it here

Take notice though, that its an old version. There are a lot of new features in the cvs version, but they don't have everything they want to make the .6 version yet. I'm not sure if you can get the cvs version in windows.

Its pretty quick. I use mozilla primarily though because I like the mail client.

Its a good relationship between Netscape and Mozilla, Netscape helps them out with development, Mozilla gives them new and better stuff.

If you have any problems with it or want to get more of an inside view of the whats going on with mozilla/related projects,, I'd suggest checking out the forums at www.mozillazine.org. I've learned a lot of things I didn't know from those forums

www.mozdev.org is a good place to find add-ons for mozilla, such as themes, mouse gestures, lots of other neat stuff.

Is that a standalone install or an "ugrade" of the earlier linked Firebird program?

It seems these "dumps" occur frequently. Do you recommend downloading every new one, or no?

I checked the 'zine out b4 downloading it, but didn't know about the dev org.
Gotta say I always one for Netscape b4 IE, and Mozilla is pretty good, if sometimes a bit hard to get used to (I was on IE for a long time ). I too like the mail client, and integrated news reader, my one gripe would be composing new mails (I totally get the fonts wrong), but that will become easier with time.

If you download the phoenix-win32.zip file from the http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/phoenix/n.../latest-trunk/ page, all you have to do is unzip it and its ready to go.

Nothing to install. Just unzip it to whever you want, then you can make a shortcut to phoenix.exe and put it on the desktop if you want.
