My Latest Case Mod Project : "The Rustbucket"

I saw BoCo's Case posted here so i thought id post my latest project, keep in mind that its not finished yet

My inspiration for this case was the Fallout series of games if any of you have played them

Heres how she started , painted the chassis

Heres my first test of the Faux Effects Rust Paint im going for in the style

And of course the All Important Leaktest before i install my water cooling sytem

As you see here i redid the front face with epoxy to allow my to put in some of the dials i want in the front (who needs a floopy ) that a rough edge before i sanded it up. '

And now the final product

Ok now a little explnation on the front All of the dials you see are scalvaged from a B-17 bomber. The large one is a Tachometer that i am working to mesure the CPU utilization (sill working some bugs outa that one, more details later)

The Top left, is a low Oxygen Blinker that im using with a ultrabright red LED to single HDD activity.

Above the dials are several switches, controling the lights and power

More pics

I used Fence hinges to give me a sucide case door, and a Trapdoor pull ring to open

I know it may not be everyones style , but shes my baby

everyone does case mods these days, I should consider doing some myself.

Who said cases have to be box shape? I would prefer something more like this

exept in windows of course

Nice case there - The fallout look is a good one - It's a shame you can't get the texture of real rust

That would look cool

Well if you feel it id does actully have a nice rough texture to it. The color is a bit off i know.

But unless i wanted to scratch it up and leave it out in the rain for a few days, its pretty close to rust as i wanna get (electronics, and flaky bits of metel do not mix as we kno )

Im also gonna be borrowing an airbrush from a friend sooner or later to see if i can get the look a little more detailed.

Pretty cool looking--trying to make it look like it's been in the ocean rusting for a few decades! If you really want to get that look, sandblast the paint off and stick it in a pond for a week--totally authentic rust and corrosion!

Those side hinges do a good job of keeping the theme going.

That is a REALLY cool case you've made there. I hope it ends up on a magazine cover.

Very nice job.

scapegoat: That is sweet! I like it a lot, and the dials are awesome. The fact that they will actually "work" is quite impressive.

Also, I liked the Fallout games a lot, and it is nice to see them being recreated elsewhere.

Kudos.

Awesome case mod! I'm personally not really into case mods, but this strikes me as a sweet project anyway.

For measuring CPU util etc. you might be able to do that by interfacing your tachometer to a serial port and writing a program that gets CPU util from the OS and writes it out on the serial port. Maybe if your tachometer uses voltage levels, you might be able to adjust those with an A to D converter between the serial port & tachometer. I'd try to make a more concrete/helpful suggestion but I don't know the hardware interfaces there.

Very cool. For the rust texture, you can mix paint with Elmer's glue until it's thick, paint it on, then blot it with a wet paper towel. gives you a visibly rough surface.

DJ Teac- Took me about 3 months, but in real work time probably only about 2 weeks, with my job i dont get much time LOL

DuckDuck - Probably on PheatonForums, havent made much progress since the last time Its Slow going

Oberon - You are absolutly right about the Serial interface with the tachometer. I Have it setup exacly that way.... The only issue is finding the proper settings to make sure the Tach Redlines at 100% , they dont exacly make manuals to B-17 Tachometers readly avalible so its taking alot of experimenting.

Rekinom - ya i could buy it but where would be the fun in that!

Now that is a rockin' case! I love it. Now, we see the case, we see the keyboard...what about the mouse and the monitor? I've got a couple ideas up my sleeve yet, but I'm waiting for warmer weather...for the most part, it's just the black paint, and stuff, although, I'm looking for a little more to it. And, the front of it will be something we're not used to seeing.

I like it...never seen anything like that before. You should think about actually letting it rust...then seal it with something...epoxy resin or some sort of polyurethane?

Looks sweet lke it is though...the orange lights work well.

scapegoat,

Very creative, and VERY nicely done. There is nothing like the feeling of facing your beloved computer with a whirring metal cutter and a can of spray paint!
