How big is the file? You might be surprised with how much you can pack onto one disc.

You should convert the AVI to OGM and then burn it as a Mode 2 CD. That way it'll fit on one disc. VirtualDubMod should be able to do the conversion, and XCDMaker will be able to make an ISO image out of the OGM file.

Also, for large files like that you can get 90 minute CDs. Most of the recent CD burners actually support all the way up to 99 minute CDs. You won't find these discs at your grocery store, but they are available online.

You can also try overburning using DAO (Disc-At-Once) instead of the default Track-At-Once. Nero supports this.

I would suggest Nandub, although I see others have already pointed you to Virtual Dub.

A great place for howtos on things like this is Doom9.org. Everything you need to turn a DVD into a movie file of your choice.

I like Doom9.org too. But I usually go to dvdrhelp.com - they have tons of converting information (and lots more)

I've always like Premiere. Though, if you're just splitting (ie. not also editing) it's WAY too big of an install. Plus, very expensive if you obtain it legally.
