Crossfit

Posted 10-06-2009 at 09:09 PM by Atreides88 (Ranting Ruminations)

So, I've been sick for the past week, which has left me with little energy to do anything beyond sleep and loaf around. Unfortunately my daily schedule isn't entirely conducive to my needs but I have been sleeping a lot more than usual, for example, I've gotten about twenty hours of sleep within the last three days, and it usually takes me a week to get that much sleep. A pleasant side effect of being well rested is that I have the energy and am relaxed enough to be able to think and ponder about the general make-up of my existence. While doing this thinking, I've come to a few conclusions:

1) I'm going to start doing crossfit. I need to get into better shape, especially if I ever hope to make it through OCS. So, whenever I get over this plague, I am going to start following the workout of the day and start kicking my ass on a more regular basis. The goal is to get back down to about 205. I'll log my workouts on here to monitor my progress.

2) I miss doing...

Amon Amarth Covers

Posted 08-12-2009 at 09:54 PM by Atreides88 (Ranting Ruminations)

So I love Scandinavian metal. I don't know what it is, but these Germanic peoples are ridiculously good at making metal music. I bet it's something in the water, or maybe it has something to do with spending a lot of time inside during the regular blizzards, or maybe it's the fact that they're all decided from Vikings, making them awesome. Who knows? Well, I certainly don't.

Anyway, one of my favoritest metal bands is Amon Amarth who compose melodies about Vikings. I hope by this point a pattern is starting to emerge. So, whilst I was traversing teh intarwebs, specifically youtube, I ran into fan videos featuring covers some had created of popular Amon Amarth songs. It just so happens that some of these did not feature face-melting electric guitars, heart-exploding drum solos, or even gravelly growling lead-singers, but instead replaced it all with pianos. Curious, I explored further and here's what I found:

Ode To Rum

Posted 08-11-2009 at 10:32 PM by Atreides88 (Ranting Ruminations)

I have expensive tastes. At least I'm honest enough to admit to it. The expensiveness of my tastes extends to everything. I like fast cars and these tend to be expensive. I like well-tailored, high quality suits and these are expensive. I like amazing food, and this tends to be reasonably priced if not a bit on the pricey side. I also like great cigars, and many of these are hellaciously expensive.

So, given that information, it should be easy to conclude that my tastes in alcohol are also expensive. Now, I'm not a really heavy drinker, so the handful of drinks I have on a usual Friday night never really break the bank, but I do tend to consume imported beer and I have high standards in the mixed drink department. The strange thing is, that a buddy of mine turned me onto Sailor Jerry rum, and though it's cheap, I've really learned to love it. I just find it odd that I would happily trade Sailor Jerry for Bacardi or any of the other high end stuff any day, but what can you...

Skulls

Posted 07-31-2009 at 09:28 PM by Atreides88 (Ranting Ruminations)

I've had the lyrics for the Misfits' Skulls stuck in my head all day. Perhaps it's because it's my favorite Misfits song. There's a great acoustic cover of the song by Evan Dando out there that I also love.

My budget is about $1000 US and I'm eyeing either getting a new Dell or getting an HP, specifically these two models:
HP Pavilion dv6
Dell Studio 15

My question, what is your advice as I esteem the collective wisdom of this board highly? Are Lenovos, ACERs, Sonys, etc. any good? I'd like to be able to do moderate gaming (i.e. NOT Crysus at warp speed) and if it can handle most of the middle of the road games it should be able to handle most engineering programs. Thank you.
