Why am I still working for this (dis)organization?

Hey, what does working at a disorganized company get you?

A collection notice in your name on a bill that should have went to the company.

Hey!

. . .

Fuck me....

On fitness: less is more

I'm on my own at the gym—no trainer. But this could be a good thing. I'm not sure I completely subscribe to the conventional methods of training, and I certainly don't subscribe to what most people do at the gym.

The mainstream fitness media would convince you that you need to apply all kinds of "new" and "fabulous" techniques to "blast you to a better body." This coming from the same folks who push all kinds of useless and/or harmful supplements, if not indirectly through advertising from the fitness industry. What happens is that we complicate things unnecessarily. The average exercise enthusiast, and even the average avid trainer, doesn't need 90% of the crap out there. What they need is a reality check.

I've seen it: people spending much of their time wranging away on a machine that focuses on a minor stabilizing muscle, such as hip adductors or abductors. They do this because they want tone and shape. I get it. But what...

I have a new part-time job

Posted 09-01-2009 at 11:19 AM by Baraka_Guru (Baraka_Blog)

I'm self-employed. My job is to do what I have to do to switch careers. I've been gearing up for this, but now I have to drop the hammer. I have the resources I need; all I need to do is use them.

Beginning today, I will spend as much as 10 or 20 hours per week either improving my skills/knowledge or searching for a new position in a new industry.

I have the time now. I'm not currently taking any courses; I have no freelance work on the go; I have nothing but free time outside my 9 to 5.

My mind is on track to make this change. I firmly believe what Earl Nightingale said about the human mind: "We become what we think about."

It's already started. My mind is fixated on this. I am being drawn on to this new path. I can't think of anything else right now I'd rather do. Leisure isn't as appealing to me as it once was. I used to be compulsive about having free time to waste doing nothing. Now I can't wait to get home to...

Gravitational pull

Posted 08-31-2009 at 12:27 PM by Baraka_Guru (Baraka_Blog)

The more I contemplate things, the more I feel the lure of the financial services industry.

I've worked on a number of books on finance, and I enjoyed them immensely. Perhaps I planted a seed in the back of my mind that I would love to do some of the things the authors do for a living.

Hey, I like money.

But seriously, I enjoyed all the finance-related courses I've taken, and I did well. I have several years of retail experience, which should help me at least get my foot in the door somewhere—even if it's a bank.

Oh, god, how did it come to this? I'mma gonna be a banker?

Maybe, maybe not. This whole process is about exploring options and not self-imposing limitations, right? If working at a bank feels right, then why in hell not do it?

I'll at least look into it. The worst I can do is look for a job in that industry and come up empty. Even a mediocre result will find me employed at a well-run...

Goal-setting, fitness, & ego: a six-pack experiment

Posted 08-28-2009 at 11:27 AM by Baraka_Guru (Baraka_Blog)

I can admit that I have an issue with my ego. It's pretty fragile. I can admit that. It's not nearly as bad as it has been. I've come a long way. I can admit that too.

I need to do something big.

I'm going through a drastic life change, and I need stepping stones. One way to build momentum is to achieve a series of life goals. For example, achieving fitness goals can help give you the momentum to achieve career goals. This is what I want to do.

I finished with my trainer this week, and so now I'm on my own. I'm going to shift gears. I've built some strength and burned some fat, so now I want a new goal.

I want a six-pack. I want something to boost my ego and confidence.

This is achievable if one considers my stature, metabolism, and fitness experience. All that's missing is the plan and the dedication. Now, I know six-packs are some kind of "holy grail" of fitness, but this really is achievable. I...
