so ive been training pretty hard over the past two months or so, trying to get fit for many things ive got planned over the next 12 months.
ive been running a few times a week, doing gym and skipping, some weights and strength work and cycling for cardio and low impact.
as much as i love swimming i have virtually stopping swimming because of a shoulder injury i got playing rugby, hoping that it'd settle down before i got back into swimming again on a daily basis.
my first goal was to play in the rugby world sevens here in dubai. we've been playing touch rugby for a good part of a year now and have won several competitions. tackle rugby is a different story and needs more training and toughening up, but still requires the agility needed because its half the number of players with the same size field.
ive ignored the niggling injuries that are part and parcel of playing sport and have accepted that they will always be a part of life.
unfortunately i sit here with one leg on the table with an icepack on my quad as i type this. ive never really pulled a muscle in all my years of sport. nothing like this.
after a hard training session doing lunges last week and then a run with the local running club straight after, i was a little sore. 2 days later i had a game of touch rugby and felt it getting tight as the game went on. with a minute to spare and the ball in my hands, running away to score in the corner, i twinged my quad ever so slightly. it wasnt painful, but erring on the side of caution i came straight off. i took it easy on the running this week, preferring to gym it and row for cardio. i never felt the quad muscle after that.
this afternoon i showed up to training. the first sprint and my quad gave way. literally 3 seconds into my first run. its not the injury that im disappointed about its all the hard work, effort, and events that ill miss and wont be ready for. other than the rugby sevens i had a 2 day hike planned for next week, i had the dubai marathon planned for january, i planned to do a 100km hike in hong kong next year, as well as a 7 day trek in peru.
now everything is on hold pending what the physio is going to say. its pretty shitty not knowing whether all my hard work has gone down the drain. i need to re-work my training schedule to incorporate cardio exercise. i can still do weightlifting, but with my shoulder not being 100%, i dont want to overwork it.
so im really fucking pissed that both upper boday and lower body workouts are curbed significantly. im hopping that my body bounces back quickly, and i can still do the trek next weekend.
right now ive missed the rugby session, the running club run and monday nights touch rugby for certainty. most likely a two day trek will not do me any favours, so its highly unlikely that ill be doing that either.
i know im sulking in my own sorrow but TFP is the only place i can vent right now
