Happy Bastille Day!

Posted 07-14-2009 at 11:05 AM by genuinegirly

I had this poem by Charles Baudelaire rolling off my tongue and bumping through my mind all day. It has nothing to do with French Independence. It's just a poem that I memorized for a random French class. Pretty.
Correspondances

La Nature est un temple où de vivants piliers
Laissent parfois sortir de confuses paroles;

Cottage Cheese

I have re-discovered large curd cottage cheese. This has become my favorite breakfast and snack. It's pretty much nothing but protein, which gives me a boost of energy.

I didn't much like cottage cheese for several years. Something about its texture, I didn't much care for it. Then I picked up large-curd instead one day a couple of weeks ago, and I couldn't believe how much more delicious it was! I'm hooked.

My mother used to substitute small-curd cottage cheese in place of ricotta in lasagna. The result was a creamier consistency. She never used a recipe, so I've chosen a recipe online that seemed the most like what she slapped together. She also refused to cook with onion and garlic, which made for some different-tasting Italian food. The following recipe is an adaption from this website.

Cottage Cheese Lasagna

1 (16-ounce) whole tomatoes
1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons dried oregano...

Incredibly productive

Posted 07-10-2009 at 07:46 AM by genuinegirly

Oh dear, what has happened?

I've been out of it. I've been a mess. I've been stressed. I've been feeling ill, exhausted. Then out of nowhere, last night I felt good. I decided to do stuff, and to keep doing things that were productive until I completely crashed.

After 8pm last night, I did this stuff:
- grocery shopping
- drove to lab, tested a new timer for the lab
- started some new seeds for flowers in the garden
- another trip to pick up paint thinner so I can play with oil paints over the weekend
- cleaned up 5 old water-based paint cans and poked drainage holes to make containers for expanding the garden per landlord's recommendation
- designed and cut fabric for a valence for our bedroom window
- collected a bouquet of white night-blooming wildflowers and foliage from wild grapes, which I arranged and placed in a crystal vase in our bedroom

I went to bed around 11pm. I woke up excited...

Wake up

I slept well last night. I didn't expect to, since I took a 3-hour nap mid-afternoon yesterday. Just that tired. It was the usual alarm - some sort of jazzy music on my cell phone. And here I am, rested, happy.

Last night we went over to a friend's house. He's in the business program with Tt - a talented musician who made the evening memorable by playing on piano / guitar / harmonica any song his friends suggested. He did an especially good job with Sweet Child Of Mine by Guns & Roses. I was a bit shocked at his pic work. Pizza, beer pong, martinis, music - a delightful experience all around. I had my one drink which I nursed most of the evening - a fruity little thing the host called a Cosmo. About an hour into arriving, four of the other MBA students arrived after visiting a restaurant with half-priced wine where they consumed 8 bottles. They arrived more than a little smashed, grabbed a beer or two, sang along to the music, and danced. One of the four...

Independence Day

Posted 07-04-2009 at 02:49 PM by genuinegirly

We made our own hamburger buns from scratch (yum! Fresh baked bread!) and enjoyed a delightful lunch complete with fresh sweet corn and fresh homemade limeaid.

No picnic for fireworks for us tonight - it's raining and doesn't look like it's going to slow down.
