also known as, Flavor Flav.

a long time ago, may have been back when we still had the journals, I pledged to do an entry dedicated to one of rap's unsung heroes, Flavor Flav.

I didn't forget.

A lot of people tend to think that he is just a jokester and a clown and, in some ways, he certainly is. With all of his wacky clocks and energy and facial acrobatics, lol. He certainly has a unique way of getting his point across. Back in 1990, right after the release of Fear of a Black Planet, I went to see Public Enemy in concert and I'm telling you, it wouldn't have been a show without the energy of Flavor Flav. He is a born entertainer.

His song contributions to the Public Enemy oeuvre, if you will, were funnier and lighter in spirit than the message-heavy lyrics of Chuck D, it's true, but the actual content of his songs, when you get past their...

thank you, Henrietta Lacks.

Quote:
A HeLa cell (also Hela or hela cell) is an immortal cell line used in scientific research. The cell line was derived from cervical cancer cells taken from Henrietta Lacks, who died from her cancer on October 4, 1951...

...The cells were propagated by George Otto Gey without Lacks' knowledge or permission (neither she nor her family gave permission) and later commercialized, although never patented in their original form. Then, as now, there was no requirement to inform a patient, or their relatives, about such matters because discarded material, or material obtained during surgery, diagnosis or therapy was the property of the physician and/or medical institution. This issue and Ms. Lacks' situation was brought up in the Supreme Court of California case of Moore v. Regents of the University of California. The court ruled that a person's discarded tissue and cells are not their property and can be commercialized.

Initially, the cell line was said to be named

I really enjoyed this article - can't seem to get it off my mind today.

It's not too long or in-depth...just an overview.
I find it fascinating, though.

the good old days.

I've literally been poring over photographs by Lewis Hine, a sociologist and photographer who documented child labor conditions for the National Child Labor Committee during the early part of of the twentieth century. There are hundreds of his photos out there, many of which can be found here:
Shorpy Historic Photo Archive | Best Pix on the Net
- which I posted yesterday in the 'Found on the net' forum.

The images are quite remarkable, not only for what they capture in the faces of these children, but for their artful beauty, as well.

At the time these were taken, many states had no regulations on the use of child labor and in those states that did have them, they were often ignored. It wasn't until 1938 and the passage of the Fair Labor Standards Act that measures to regulate the use of child labor were put into place on a national level. It wasn't so long ago, really.

someone tell me how to solve this, please!

Posted 10-03-2009 at 12:30 PM by mixedmedia (Working Memory)

In a study of pleas and prison sentences, it is found that 61% of the subjects studied were sent to prison. Among those sent to prison, 44% chose to plead guilty. Among those not sent to prison, 37% chose to plead guilty.

If a study subject is randomly selected and it is then found that the subject entered a guilty plea, find the probability that this person was not sent to prison.
