Metro III - The Bus

Posted 08-25-2009 at 01:24 PM by Poppinjay (tastes like burning)

I had to be on the road quite a bit yesterday, both to Rosslyn (right across the river from DC) and to Springfield (about 10 miles south of the border).

Both trips required going to the Pentagon. Which I've never done, so of course I ask the driver because I don't know jack shit about where I'm going. He tells me where to get off, in a nice way, not the grimy underbelly of a common Judd Apatow joke.

I had a resume I wanted to get to a place in Rosslyn. The company was supposed to be at a career fair. They were not. So I got on the train and started south. But before I started south, I called D to see if she could google where that company was, because I knew they were in the vicinity. I finally reach her after getting on a train. Apparently the company was a half block north of the metro station. So I turn around, go back to that stop, and pay $1.35 for the pleasure of going nowhere.

Metro Stories - The Suicide

This was the crash. At first, Metro pointed their collective finger at the driver, saying it was her error. She was conveniently one of the people who died. NTSB's investigation showed it was entirely a failure in the track system. The truly fucked up thing is that Metro officials know that the drivers don't really drive, it's all done by sensors and computers. At least, it used to be. The drivers are driving now.

So, two days later, I'm on the redline, which is entirely not my usual train outside of getting to work zones. I was going to meet friends up in NW DC. So on the way back, the announcement comes on that trains are operating in only one lane. I call a well placed...

Metro Stories

I've been using public transportation a lot lately. More than just the easy to use trains (except when there's a major crash, suicide - 5 this year! or employee death), but also the various bus systems. The Dash. The Circulator, Fairfax Connector, and of course the Metro bus. The Metro bus is nice, it tells you about each stop coming up.

The other buses don't do that, however the Circulator is like riding in a first class plane seat if the sky were filled with potholes and stoplights (I'm looking at you, Airbus).

On the train, it's dog eat dog. Or asshole be asshole while the rest of us work around you, asshole. These include people who try to rush in before passengers get off. Also people who stand left on the escalator (though I usually have no problem with that as it gives me an excuse not to hurry). Also people who run through the station and run down the escalator for a train...

Crush groove

So I said that to say this, where I work we have a moment each day where we admit to a small personal detail. My question on monday will be: what celebrities do you have a crush on?

Anybody know mine?

Of course.

Am I a goober because I like women who rock? I also like lit chicks.

Lydia Millet, read her. Now! NOW! The smartest writer I know, and a brunette to boot. Rowr.

Woo.

Lydia actually exchanges e-mail with me! Which makes me kind of... no, I won't quote Anchorman. I'm nobody. Really. Ask anybody.

Hey, another super cutie:

It's a good thing I'm not motivated to find down low, or low down, or however...

ef ef ef ef ef ef ef

Wouldn't it have been fun to actually say those words?

Ef. Ef means fucking. Not like the funfucking, but like the bad "fucking fuck left us the fuck out here!"

Meanwhile, there is a message encouraging me to post about who I like.

Or engage in a conversation.

OKAY!

I work from 2-10p, hiking several miles a day. As a condition of our employment, hookups happen, but not with me. I'm married. Happily.

So I turn to TFP, my magic friends. I have a great crush on you all, even the guys (not really, to be honest it's the women who I crush on).

So..... now that I've let myself baldly be, um baldly transparent, I probably have taken my posting time too long, but I love you, and I love your posts!
