Long drive to Chicago. 28 hours. Avoided music and the associated memories. Audiobooks did little to shorten the drive across the desert. Felt disconnected. Pushed the stress into a ball and buried it in my gut. Wife and children were not comfortable there. In the end, I couldn’t. Disconnecting further from my family while living so far away would not lead anywhere good.

Furnished apartment sublet. Definitions of furnished differ. Bare walls, a couch for a bed. Not very warm. Hyde Park is a grocery store wasteland. Look forward to moving north.

Look forward to talking to my kids tonight. Son parrots everything daughter says on the phone. Surprised he can talk on the phone at all. Internet and webcam ordered.

in the end though, I think it will all work out. just keep yourself focused on why you did it.

I appreciate the "you know that.." comment.

Often, when I tell people that I have to move away from my family, they say "Oh that's horrible! I can't even imagine it! I would never survive!" As if I didn't know. I'm experiencing it right now!

Moved to Chicago and left people behind myself a year ago. This city can be cold, the winter is going to fucking suck. Just take it one day at a time.

And whenever you're ready for welcome company, just say the word - we've actually got group plans in the work for this coming weekend...

I grew up in Wisconsin. So, I have experienced cold winters. (Though my blood has probably thinned from all of my years in the Southwest). In the future, I will have to attend one of the Chicago meet-ups.

My pop is from Wisconsin (Racine) and he's incredibly cold natured. Even in the spring he'll wear long sleeves and pants. I'm from Orlando and am extremely hot natured... I guess it's all dependent on the person. I'm sure you'll survive the winters just fine.

.. oh yeah.. I came here to say you should definitely attend the meet ups. It will help the transition to the Windy City go a bit smoother maybe.
