Hanging out with Thelma and Louise

Posted 10-25-2008 at 09:13 AM by skizziks

So I am staying in a hostel in Guadalajara, the second biggest city in Mexico. Guadalajara is huge, kinda dirty, it feels like a regual big city, where people are tying to rip you off, lots of beggers, the usual.

They had lots of mariachi clothing stores. I was thinking of buying a mariachi suit and a huge sombrero, and just walking around mexico with it. People would ask me if i was a mariachi, and id be all "dont hassle me, Im local. cant you tell by my clothes" I think it would be hilarious.

I meet these two ladies, one 50 years old, the other 52, both Mexican. They invite me out with them and I see it as free tourguides. They will take me where the mexicans go, I will learn how to do things the Mexican way, etc. We go to Tonala, an arts and crafts market kinda town, which was cool. We walked around looking at pottery and leather goods and ate lunch. We had gorditas, which are kinda like stuffed pitas.

Then we went...

chpter 7: in which our hero encounters danger

Posted 10-22-2008 at 08:58 AM by skizziks

so i´m sitting at a table in zacatecas, mexico, a town that would be perfect for espionage, with all its nooks and crannies. plenty of places for clandestne dealings.

I´m enjoying a cigarette, overlooking the street, when a group of young mexicans enter the joint. they look tough, probably some narco terrorists or something, i´m sure at least two of them have done time in prison, they are obvoiusly a gang. i tense up a bit, but i try to show no fear, they can sense that, and they look like they would pounce. they are a bit rowdy, i am expecting some trouble. i avoid eye contact, i just want to finish my cigarette and get the hell out of there.

one of them leans over and asks where i´m from. dammit, something is going to happen, i can feel it. i tell them i´m american, from colorado, smile weakly and go back to looking at the street, smoking as fast as i can. i think to myself "ok, i only have a few bucks in my wallet, i won´t lose much, they...

Where the hell am i?

i arrived in zacatecas, stayed at a hostel, which was the coolest place ever. great location, great people, a party on the roof every freakin night. zacatecas was really cool at first, it looks like southern spain, very colonial. there was a festival going on, which made it better.

but then, i realized, it was a huge tourist town. it was one big huge mall, all the buildings were stores, selling high end everything.

sadly, there was even a starbucks. ouch! it hurt me. i was used to getting 30 cent tacos on the street from a street vendor, whenever i wanted. i had to go to a restaurant to eat (i had the best freakin mole ever.) mornings, really early, i could find tamales and other street food on the street down some back alleys. street food rocks.

i did go to a kick ass museum, which had been a convent at one time, the artist was freakin amazing. Rafael Coronel, he is the MAN!

I talked to this crazy german chick,...

random thoughts while waiting for a show

Posted 10-19-2008 at 10:51 AM by skizziks

man i love mexico. im so glad i stayed an extra night in durango, i was walking around killing time and happened upon an outdoor show. turns out there is the Revueltas festival all month, live culural events, music and dancing and such. there was a south african dance troupe, and it was free, and i have nothing better to do, so i hung out.

while waiting for the show to start, i had random thoughts going through my mind:

- the mexican tourist beurau should think about using the slogan: Mexico, land of cleavage

- live music can makeyou feel drunk, even when you havent had any booze for a while

- it turns out the Harlem Globtrotters are still alive. they are currently touring mexico. a far cry from helping out scooby doo

- while its in no way better than actually gettin laid, stealing smiles from pretty girls does bright up a day and makes living almost seem like its worth the effort. i still wish i could get...
