Decriminalizing Prostitution
Much has been said, pro and con, about the idea of decriminalizing the act of prostitution. We may agree/disagree about the morality or the desirability of it, but the big question is: why should any democratic government make it a criminal offense?
This raises the question of the role of government in our private lives. In my opinion, the only role for the legislative branch of a democracy should be to protect our individual rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If no one ever infringed on the rights of any other, there would hardly be any need for criminal laws at all.
So then the question is: does a person, who is an adult, violate anyone else’s rights by choosing to sell sexual favors for money? If not, why should there be any law against it? Whose business is it besides the parties directly involved?
The same logic applies to gambling, drug use, or to who can marry whom...
