I'm wicked excited and have already been doing research. Got it for school and I had to splurge on the pro for the built in SD card instead of saving $150 on an identical MacBook.

I'm going to be getting into photography alot more (hence the SD card slot).

Any suggestions of things I need / will want to do with my mac when I get it?

I'm off to do more research and searches on the forum but wanted my own threat just to show off.

So I want to buy an old server (ebay has lots going cheaply), install Linux/Apache and host my own sites instead of paying someone else to host for me.
I've already got two books on actual use of the server, one on installing Linux and Apache and one on configuring the server for using PHP and mySql for running database web sites. I'm looking for practical guides on wiring, installing, connecting more than one server, etc.
Is there some books which I can read to give me advice on actual hook up/internet protocols?
Forget the why's and wherefore's which will inevitably follow such a plan from the more experienced members, just stick to the details.

Well I am wanting to add fire-wire to a computer that does not have it. This computer is a 2 yr old acer. The mobo may have it but I don't have any manual and from what I can tell there is not any where on the mobo to install it.

I am looking for a 1394 PCI(not PCI-E) add-on card. Which is easy to find. Lots of them. But I want to be able to connect stuff up to the front of the PC. Like I already do with usb and etc. But I can not find a card that has the front panel attachment. All of them have internal fire-wire ports. But that does not really help me out. As all the separate front panels do not have fire-wire ports on them. Its just a block of wires to hook to a mobo.

If anyone has a good idea of how to fix this issue please let me know. I need to burn some videos from my camcorder so I gotta have this issue fixed by the middle of the week so time is of the essence. If I do not find a better option I will just order the standard one and hook it up on the back but I would rather not.

Thanks Smackre,

So I've got this 16GB USB thumb drive. It has served me well over the past couple years. Recently, it started acting up where I had to nudge it to reestablish the connection to the USB port. At first it was infrequent, but yesterday I noticed it was a serious issue. Then, today, it stopped connecting no matter how much I try to maneuver it. The problem? The data on the USB drive isn't backed up. I know, I know, and I was going to do that today too! Unfortunately, it stopped working while I was using it at work, before I had a chance to back it up and buy a new drive.

Basically, it seems to me like the connection is possibly bent and no longer in contact with the flash memory. Is there any way to recover this data?

So I got this win7 RC dvd, and wanted to drop it on my old 939 system. I crack open the case because I want to drop in my 7900GT. Oh wait, no 6-pin PCI-E power plug.

No problem. I go and get a beer. Sam Adams winter lager. Good shit, and very seasonal. Highly recommended.

I grab an old antec PSU that gave up the ghost years ago and cut one 6-pin PCI-E plug off internally. I cut them even, strip the insulation off the tips and take the PSU out of my old case. It's a dual 12v rail forton PSU. Old but in very good shape. I cut some leads out of it a while back because I had too many worthless leads laying around in the case, so now it was a matter of slapping one back on. I found the 12v leads I had shrink wrapped and stripped them on the ends. I did the same with my grounds. I only had 2 12v leads, so I chose to double up on one coming from the 3 12v lead 6-pin plug. No problem, this will carry plenty of juice for this card.

I tinned all my leads then soldered it all up, shrank my heatshrink over the bare metal and slapped it back in the case. Not one glitch. Perfect.

Now my old ass PSU is PCI-E compliant. Love it :)

Win7 aint bad either, but I wouldn't pay full price for it. Need to go find someone in college to get me one :)

The new Droid phone became available at Verizon on Friday, and Grancey and I got ours. We've been with Verizon for 6 years, and our two-year contract was up for renewal on Friday (big coincidence), so we took the plunge.

We are two people who have NEVER accessed the internet, music, or e-mail through our phones before (we both had RAZR phones before this), and we're rocking out with these new Droids. I love mine, and so far I can probably only do about 2% of what it's capable of handling.

We were starting to get a little fed up with Verizon's customer service and were considering switching to AT&T for an iPhone when the Verizon contract expired, but several things changed our minds. The main issue was coverage - when we finish our house and move to the country, AT&T will just not work out there, whereas Verizon is all over the place. Secondly, a very trusted friend told us all about the Droid a couple of weeks ago, so we started looking at info. Finally, we went into the Verizon store Friday just to look at it when we ran into an IT guy from another business who raved and gushed to us about how fantastic the Droid would be.

When a geek gushes about technology, you listen.

If you're considering getting one, here's a major caveat - be prepared to log into your gmail account BEFORE you walk into the store (that means mail address PLUS password). It took us literally two hours to finally get logged in from our phone (the Droid is synced up to gmail and Google) because neither of us could get our paswords to work. I didn't have my glasses with me and couldn't read the teeny tiny screen that was telling me what to do in case I forgot my password (I dare you to try and read a CAPTCHA from a 3.7 inch screen), so we eventually drove home to our home computers, logged in, wrote down our passwords, and drove back to the Verizon store to finish up.

All in all, we're like kids at Christmas this weekend.

In turn, those who have the ability to send out invites and are feeling generous, post here so other's can get invited too.

So I'm in the market for a new television. I'll probably wait until a couple weeks after Black Friday as last years data showed the name brands went on sale around that time. So I have an LCD TV already.. it's a decent Vizio. However, I'm in the market for a larger one now. I'm torn between a plasma and the new LEDs.

Now before everyone says that plasmas are old hat blah blah blah.. I want to state that this thread isn't for fanboi posts, it's for people who want to talk about differences in tv's and which is best for them.

I know that Plasma seems to have better blacks than lcds.. but the lcds have a better viewing angle and crisper colors. I usually watch tv in a dimly lit room, so the plasma will look great in those lighting conditions. I just don't know which way to go at this point. Samsung has a great 55" LED lcd, but Panasonic makes some awesome..and I mean AWESOME plasma sets that are quite a bit cheaper than the LED price points.

So let's hear the pros and cons of both LCD and Plasma. You can help me decide which way to go, and you can show off your expert technical knowledge. :D

I know there are other threads around here on the subject, but I'm in a bit of a rush and don't have time to search.
