It's obvious that movies have trends. Lately, it's been zombies and vampires, with a few werewolves tossed in. Frankly, it's all good. But is it overdone? Are we headed for tilt? Maybe, maybe not.

The same thing happened in the '80s with movies about ninjas. They were awesome, no matter how cheesy they were. As a kid I loved the concept of ninjas: deadly martial artists who could appear and disappear, leaving corpses and the occasional shuriken as the only evidence that they were ever there.

I've been hiding it well enough here on TFP, but I'm into ninjas just about as much as Crompsie....er..Plan9...is into his monstrous triad.

Coming out of the '80s and into the '90s to today, the idea of ninjas in movies were mainly for comedic effect. Maybe it was warranted during our hangover from those movies. But are we over it?

I am.

Enter Ninja Assassin! It's funny, just a few months ago, I was lamenting the lack of big-budget ninja action. The martial art of choice in film these days has been kung-fu. And here seemingly out of nowhere---like the ninja---my despair gets assassinated by this Joel Silver/Wachowski-brother joint.

I don't care if it sucks and gets panned by the critics. I'm totally hitting this on the big screen.

Feast your eyes, ninja fans!

Anyone watching the new V?

I vaguely remember the original as a kid: mostly the general feel of the series and the true nature of the "Visitors," rather than what was actually happening plotwise. I did get a bit nostalgic seeing the pilot last week.

Promo Trailer:

Sneak Peek (Some slight spoilers, it's close to being a summary to the pilot):

**Some slight spoilers in video**

I must say I'm enjoying it. It's not blowing my mind, but it's good enough for me.

The issues I have are with some sloppy acting and some slightly lame characterization, plus a little bit of identity crisis in terms of genre. But it's not that bad.

What I do like is its use of suspense. It isn't in your face like other sci-fi. I'm going to continue watching it as I'm already looking forward to the third episode.

Plus, here is the requisite "worth the price of admission":

Anyone else watching this?

Just like that male actors thread but females. For me this is harder because I get distracted by sex appeal and that seriously distorts my judgement of how proficient their their acting is or isn't. For me Lindsay Lohan has phonomenal sex appeal and for a long time I found myself defending the quality of her acting against critics. I am still very fond of her but I wouldn't say her acting is anything special. It doesn't help that her choice of roles has been staggeringly bad for years.

My other favourites are Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon and Rachel McAdams. But if I'm being honest I'd watch anything any of these are in not because they are great actors (they can be but not always), but because they are extremely nice to look at. Eric Roberts' daughter (and Julia Roberts' neice) Emma Roberts has, like Lindsay, had an impressive career as a child star and I'm keen to see her in more serious films than Wildchild and Hotel for Dogs.

My favourites from bygone times are Joan Blondell, Olivia De Havilland, Faye Dunaway, Jenny Agutter and (when she was younger) Winona Ryder.

Ok so I've been trying very hard to remember the title of a book I read as a child.

General plot: There is a young boy who lives in a sort of underground dystopia. He endeavors to escape, finds a young girl on his way, and they make their way painfully to the surface past guards, etc. They eventually escape into the surface world, where all the artificial rules and restrictions of their previous life no longer apply.

The title was short, 3 or 4 words, and involved the word 'dark' or darkness.

Something like:

Into the Darkness
Out of the Darkness
Diving into darkness

Something like that.

>< sorry for not having much to work off of.

I have just finished reading American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis and because it describes some very shocking things it got me wondering whether it was the most disturbing, depraved book I have read.

I thought so immediately after finishing it. But on balance I think I was more appalled by The Room by Hubert Selby Jr. Both books feature very heavy and detailed violence but I found that of American Psycho easier to bear, I think partly because it was tempered by humor and an unreal, slightly absurd atmosphere - and partly because most of the violence was directed against women and, being male, I found it less easy to identify with. The things that are described in The Room were more troubling to me because they mostly happen to men, and their perpetrator was - unlike Patrick Bateman - someone I ended up utterly detesting. Reading The Room was like being deep inside the guy's mind and his most lurid fantasies. The reader is trapped in his mind just as he is trapped in the room - it gets claustrophobic.

So those two are the 'worst' fiction books I've read. I know some people find non-fiction and true crime more affecting because they know that what's described really happened. I'm not one of them but if I was I think Panzram: A Journal of Murder by Gaddis and Long would be the most horrific book I have read so far. Carl Panzram was an American serial killer who lived in the first half of the 20th Century and whose detailed first-hand confessions and memoirs make up the bulk of that book.

Now American Psycho's finished I'm going to read something more wholesome (Moby Dick perhaps) but at some point in the future I may want to read about some more extremely cold-blooded, insanely detailed, elaborate and pointless suffering. What I want to know is: what else is as bad as, or even worse than the three books I've mentioned here? Have you ever had to stop reading, look up and around, and pause a moment for your mind to properly boggle at the awfulness of what you just read? What was that book?

I got to thinking of classics (again excluding romantic classics) and I can't think of 1 sex scene in the whole bunch. Do you think it was more a sign of the times? Or is it just distracting in a good book that has a real message? I mean, it's certainly a lot more realistic for the characters to be having sex in the book, just like they would in real life. So what do you think? Will the classics of the future have sexual exploits in them?
