No Bananas in the future??? (article)

But I love bananas and all foods that are made from bananas.

Abstract: "Panama disease - or Fusarium wilt of banana - is back, and the Cavendish does not appear to be safe from this new strain, which appeared two decades ago in Malaysia, spread slowly at first, but is now moving at a geometrically quicker pace. There is no cure, and nearly every banana scientist says that though Panama disease has yet to hit the banana crops of Latin America, which feed our hemisphere, the question is not if this will happen, but when."   click to show

I can only hope. I loathe the taste of, and am mildly allergic to, bananas.

Wonder where the "food chain's" going to break a link next?

As I recall, there is a repository for seeds (colloquially known as the "doomsday vault"). It may be time to put some safe banana seeds in there and ride this one out.

Do not despair, my banana-loving friends!

There's always....
  • the squat, squarish Burro, with its tangy lemon-banana flavor;
  • the Blue Java (or Ice Cream) banana, which has a blotchy, silver-blue skin and tastes of ice cream;
  • the short, chunky red banana and the dwarf or finger banana, both of which are sweeter than the Cavendish;
  • the strawberry-apple-flavored Manzano (which turns black when ready to eat);
  • the diminutive Mysore from India;
  • and the Orinoco with its trace of strawberry flavor.
And let's not forget the plantain.

I have one of these trees in my yard. Manzano is Spanish for apple, man was I confused when my gardener told me what kind of tree he was bringing me. And yes, they're great. Sadly my one little tree doesn't produce very much... yet.

the problem is that most bananas are too weak for easy shipping. The first time this happened, years back (I forget the type of banana that used to be eaten and sold in the US), they settled on the Cavendish as a replacement because, despite being considered a very inferior banana, it was the one that could stand up to the shipping easiest.

Here's a very interesting interview on NPR's Fresh Air, with the author of a recent book all about bananas: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...oryId=19097412

I would think, at this point, bananas would sell for more than 29 cents a pound if they were endangered.

Now, ask me about chesapeake crab and we'll talk moratorium.

It seems to me that bananas are different now than they were just 10-15 years ago. They seemed smaller, softer, and tastier before, now all I ever see are these huge almost green bananas that just aren't that great..

monocropping, comrades.
this is a function of monocropping.

export markets are dominated by i think 2 of the 65 or so varieties of banana.
smeth's right: these 2 are grown for trucks and ships.
industrial capitalism in agriculture is a mixed bag.
in bananaland, blight is one of the things you find at its bottom.

An excellent point. Whenever I think about bananas this way, I'm reminded about how we're privileged to even have them available in our market (Canada vs. the source). And so cheap? Like other things, we take this for granted. The 100-Mile Diet has been garnering a lot of attention here lately. The way oil's headed, and in addition to this blight, the price of bananas are likely set to skyrocket.
