TFP Time Capsule

after reading MixedMedia's thread on the 100 year photograph, i thought it may be a good idea to approach TFP to see if anyone is interested in putting together a TFP Time Capsule.

im not sure how to go ahead from here, but some of you may have some ideas on this.

my idea is that we collect a whole range of photographs, poems, musings and postings and put them in a time capsule, and dedicate it to history. Maybe a donation to a museum or something of the sort to be opened after 50 years or 100 years would be a great idea. it would mark our place in History as TFP as well as our own individual presence on this earth.

i also brought up the topic of a TFP calender last year, im also thinking that we revive this and dedicate this to the TFP Time Capsule.

so what do you guys think? im open to suggestions, criticisms etc.

Is this an eTimeCapsule? A physical time capsule would be kinda tough, no? I mean, I'm not giving you fuckers my street address so you can snailmail me your crusty used condoms and sketchy glamor shots from 1989. Tangible stuff is probably more fun, though.

I'm up for a time capsule type thingie, but wouldn't we all be better served by something in a digital format? We could include pictures or text or whatever, compress it in a UserName.zip and throw it all in one folder. The capsule could be a 1TB USB external HDD.

Do you really think anybody will be able to connect a USB device to anything in 50 or 100 years? Or even if they take the HD out, where will you find a SATA port?

Where can you stick a hard drive from 50 years ago today?

Physical would be best.

That and 50 years is a ridiculous choice of a pop time. I take my Centrum but I'm not gonna last that long.

C'mon, Johnny Quest... how many people still play their NES? I mean, I was thinking shorter term, myself. 10 years would be fine.

But I get your point. Technology eats itself every 5 years. Nobody uses 3.5" floppies anymore even though a lot of us still have them.

I guess my worry is that it's an Internet forum for self-important Max Headroom personalities... not exactly a Smithsonian project.

Who do we trust to keep a footlocker of our junk for 50 years? Who's gonna care or remember? Who's gonna be here that long?

Regardless of whether or not you have a treasure chest or a .RAR file on a server... will you have TFPers who give a shit in 50 years?

Doesn't seem likely. Most of us will be dead in 50 years.

I think TFP in itself is a time capsule.

Yeah, I like clicking the "ARCHIVE" button late at night. It's a real laugh to roll back to 2003.

I won't. And if I am... I know some bus driver that's gonna have a real bad day.

Live to 73?!

I surely hope not.

It could be pretty cool, but Cromp does bring up a lot of good points.
