The sadly amusing cult thread!

A friend of mine sent me this link. She said that the 'leader' of this cult found her on a dating site and tried to lure her in...

http://www.neronology.com

It got me thinking.. how many wacky cults are out there on the net?

My fathers youngest sister was abducted into scientology. I don't find cults funny anymore. He left europe when he was 19 and while he was away a freind of hers started going to 'classes' and 'free programs' sponsored by scientology, she got sucked in because if you brought someone else with you, you could go for free. One day she decided she was leaving and didn't wan't to see her family anymore. That was more then 20 years ago by now and although I think for years my father sent postcards to her last known address's we haven't heard anything back.

After looking at the scary wallpaper I could not read the text and I became aware of the fact that the eyes were "looking" at me.

I had to get back to TFP fast where everything was normal and I could breathe again.

A lot of the really scary ones don't have a real net presence, or not much of one. These are the ones that don't look like cults at first -- they look like new-agey self-improvement seminars. But they're built on the scientology model, in that once they've got you in, they try to control you, sometimes by means that aren't pretty. I've run across a few of those. They look normal from the outside, until you start asking questions (at which point, you better run).

Cults are never funny. Most of us have enough sense of ourselves not to let someone else to move in and control our lives because, they say, they can make us better (for lots of cash, of course). But nearly everybody is emotionally vulnerable at some point in their lives, and some people are just fragile, period. These are the people that the cults hunt like wolves. They are predators and nothing but, hunting for people who they can control and use.

I wish I could found my own cult.
Maybe one of those cults where everyone has to marry/sleep with the leader. Yeah, that'd be nice.
Anyone interested?
(oh, right, no guys allowed.)

There's a cult with a pretty big following right now...

It's supposed basedly on the sacred texts of an ancient religion from the Middle East. There are stories of men and women talking face to face with this vast, all-powerful super-being face to face. Some of them go crazy from the experience, and others are hailed as heros. At one point, this super-being even came to earth in the form of the humans he had created - this is one of the cult's founders. The other founder is a man who never actually met this super-being-turned-human, but had so many visions of him that he wrote several books on it, which are now compiled into this cult's official history. Though there are other works out there that involve the cult's history, they're generally frowned upon by the cult's leaders because they go against the established rituals.

Can you guess which "cult" I'm talking about?

yournamehere - Refer to the post below yours for reasons as to why my, and hundreds of thousands of other "young persons", argument is valid. Try to avoid judging people's views arbitrarilly (and no, I'm not a hypocrite for saying that - I used to be Christian, and I lost my faith in that "religion" for good reason).

Memnoch,

I thought you were talking about Mormons.

Not that I'm pro-Christian, but it would be nice to save the anti-Christianity stuff for another thread. We can discuss 'cults' without bashing the major world religions. There is a difference, believe it or not.

Calling the world's largest religion a 'cult', is not only inaccurate, but really a little too 'bandwagon' to be considered unique. My only "judgement" of the comment dealt with its lack of originality and its questionable relevance to this thread.

As far as I'm concerned, everyone is welcome to believe or not believe whatever they want. Either way, though - keep it out of my face, please.

I'd join a cult if I met someone that was actually helped by one, instead of it ruining their life.

No. It's the Disneyland of Religion. Not real.
