Welcome New Member! I'd like to show you some cool things you can do here....

I'm going to take time every so often to show off some of the new things that this site does. We worked hard in upgrading the system and making modifications for better interaction and usabilty. (zzzZZzzZZZzzzzzz...)

Basically, there is some really neat things you can do here that I'll try to share on a regular basis. The important thing to note is that my example will always have 2 spaces to remove behind the first bracket. Those should not be there when you want to use the bbcode.

I'll start with some tame things because it's only the beginning of the show.

[ GOOGLE]Apple pie[ /GOOGLE] bbcode allows you to put the search window right on the post.

Apple pie

[ WIKI]Apple Pie[ /WIKI] bbcode allows you to link directly to Wikipedia.

Fan mail already... I didn't think anyone would PM me. I figured they'd just ask here. But I'm game for the PM.

http:// youtube.com/watch?v=mj5IV23g-fE

would be more informative as "Pay the Writer" , but I don't know how to name a link.

Got a link to a quickie lesson that a technological cement-head such as myself can follow?

Thanks for whatever you can give me.

In order to do what you're asking, it's not hard. You can use the WYSYWIG editor

type your words Pay the Writer and highlight them, and click the WEB LINK button. It will popup a small window for the URL; paste in http:// youtube.com/watch?v=mj5IV23g-fE.

you should wind up with

[ url=http://youtube.com/watch?v=mj5IV23g-fE]Pay the Writer[ /url]

For images, you upload your pictures to a site like Photobucket.com or Flickr.com and paste the URL and then click on the EMBED IMAGE button.

[ IMG]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v141/cynthetiq/7-24-20084-11-37PM.png[ /IMG]

But here are a couple of really cool things that the site does for you automatically.

Take the Youtube URL and put it right into your post

http:// youtube.com/watch?v=mj5IV23g-fE

will get you and automatic embed like below.

It will only do that for some sites (about 155 and growing,) but for all sites, it will pick up the window title and convert the URL into the words.

So if I put in http: //www.cnn. com/ 2008/LIVING/personal/07/24/rs.time.for.yourself/index.html

I wind up with How to grab more time for you - CNN.com automatically.

For Firefox users, another way to accomplish what Community Member #1 wants to achieve is the Make Link extension. You can right-click on a page to generate a perfectly-formatted URL link to paste here, using the page title and page URL. Or, you can select some text before the right-click, and that text becomes the link title.

Let's talk about harnessing the power of the internet to get people to read your posts!

If you ever write a lovely post here on the TFP and are feeling quite proud of yourself, you don't have to just WAIT for people to read it. Here are a few ways to get publicity for your post:

1. Use the Bookmarks links at the bottom of the thread.
Digg, del.icio.us & StumbleUpon are social bookmarking sites that will attract users to your links, depending on the appeal they have to other people. The more people who use these features, the more people who are more likely to check out the links. Simply click on the icons and follow the instructions to distribute the link across the internet.

2. Use your blog as a recap of your posting.
Its totally acceptable to use your blog to promote the posts that you make on the general forum. Every 10 minutes, the "featured blog" on the main blog page will rotate and you might find that your post is now being viewed by everyone hitting the page at that time. That's a good way to call attention to your great post.

3. Use the tagging feature.
Also featured at the bottom of each thread is a section for Tags. If you click on "Edit Tags" you will be able to add tags to the thread. Tags are words or phrases that are relevant to the content of the thread. What tags do is link threads with similar content together. So, if someone is looking at a different thread on a similar subject to yours, they can click on one of the tags and your thread will show as a common tagged thread. If the subject is popular enough, it will show up in the tag cloud which allows even more access to your threads.

4. Link to blogs/sites that utilize trackbacks/linkbacks
Some blogs have a feature called either trackbacks or linkbacks. When a website links to their blog post, it can detect the traffic that comes from that website and then puts a link back to the site on their page. The end result is a two-way link between both sites. Essentially, by linking to that blog, the blog will link back to your post.

Hope you all take full advantage of these tips! They only work if people use them.

Okay, easily embed your music and playlists from seeqpod and mixwit.

seeqpod

To get this kind of embedded player

Use the following BBCODE
(no spaces)

[ seeqpod]50a906182b[/seeqpod]

Note where I got the seeqpod playlist_id= to embed my music:
< embed src="http://www.seeqpod.net/cache/seeqpodSlimlineEmbed.swf" wmode="transparent" width="300" height="80" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashvars="domain=http://www.seeqpod.com&playlistXMLPath=http://www.seeqpod.com/api/music/getPlaylist?playlist_id=50a906182b"></ embed>

you can also use a slightly different one to see the full list

(remember no spaces)
[ seeqpodfull]50a906182b[/seeqpodfull]

--------------

Mixwit

To see this kind of player:

use the following bbcode:
(no spaces)

[ mixwit=73690d75b476b1ffc0739f15643f021d]30f4faaa2e1d6038c9921c7e1d4189e4[/mixwit]

[ mixwit=&widget=]&playlist=[/mixwit]

It is a little bit more complicated but once you know what to look for it is very simple. You have to find 2 different codes, the first is the &widget= and the second is &playlist=

from the embed code look for the numbers after &widget= and the &playlist=

< div style="width: 430px; height: 350px; text-align:center;">< embed width="426" height="327" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" name="mixwit_mixtape_73690d75b476b1ffc0739f15643f021d" src="http://www.mixwit.com/flash/widgets/shell.swf" quality="high" wmode="transparent" flashvars="env=embed&widget=73690d75b476b1ffc0739f15643f021d&playlist=30f4faaa2e1d6038c9921c7e1d4189e4&vuid=embed" align="middle"></embed>< div style="text-align: center; margin: auto;">< a href="http://www.mixwit.com/create?refer=embed">< img src="http://mixwit.s3.amazonaws.com/public/resources/img/embed/make-a-mixtape.gif" border="0" style="border:0px;"></a></div></div>
< img style="visibility:hidden;width:0px;height:0px;" border=0 width=0 height=0 src="http://counters.gigya.com/wildfire/CIMP/Jmx*PTEyMDgwMzkxOTkxODcmcHQ9MTIwODAzOTIwNjM3NSZwPTE4NDMzMSZkPSZuPQ==.jpg" />

You can get very creative with your mixwit embeds:

How to share your last.fm widget

Here's how you do it:

From your Last.fm profile page, go all the way to bottom to Resources.

Hit the link for Widgets.

Hit the button that says Show Me the Code.

Within the first few lines of text you should see a number like this:

6fb0c82741154ba2d1b5c62268fbca66

Code the number like this:

[lasfm=yourlast.fmusername]6fb0c82741154ba2d1b5c62268fbca66[/lastfm]

...don't forget to include the 't' in last.

and you will wind up with something like this:

And here's the perfect place to share it:
Share your Last.fm playlist with us.
