Epilator Advice

Hey ladies!

Epilators have come up a couple of times in discussions recently, in the
Shaving and upcoming Summer Weather thread and the How do you feel about your vagina? thread

I'd never heard of them before Shaindra mentioned them!

How were you introduced to them?
What do you like about yours?
How long did it take you to become comfortable using yours?
What is the average lifespan of a quality epilator?
What are good features to look for when shopping for your first?

This is the one I use.

I didn't respond to the poll because I use a plethora of hair removal methods.

I have tried others in the past but find the Emjoi epilators to be most effective. The first couple of times, it does sting quite a bit, but no red bumps here. I just dab on an astringent and it settles down. Now that I've been using it for months, I barely feel it.

The more experience you gain, the better you become. There's method (or is it art? ) to it. This particular model is meant for smaller areas and I originally purchased it because it was less costly and meant for the bikini line. I have used it to do my legs as well.

Here's the Amazon link so you can read what others thought of it.

I've heard of them, but I've never tried 'em. I just usually wax or shave.

I use the Braun Silk-Epil. I don't do my legs because I'm too much of a chicken and I never really minded shaving my legs. But I *hated* keeping up with the bikini area. Those red bumps and the irritation! Argh!

You need to trim the hair down to 1/4". Then going very slowly, hold the skin taut and sort of move the epilator to catch just a few hairs at a time. The first time you do it, it takes a *long* time to do the pubic area because it's very dense and those hairs are deep. Don't flip out if you see blood. I ended up doing it over the course of a few nights.

Once it's done, I do touch-ups every few days to a week. The touch-ups are almost nothing. A little stinging, but done quickly. And in-between, you are *smooth*. I mean, like porn-star smooth. Even better than waxing because no need to grow-out before doing it.

I'm working up the gumption to do my legs too. I do so like being nearly hairless.

I have a silk-epil also. I don't use it much. It's very painful and I prefer the fast yank of wax, or better yet, when in a rush I shave.

I find it interesting that Shaindra thinks the legs are more painful than the bikini line area.

Trust me, the legs are easy compared to that.

Thanks for the tips and opinions, everyone! I'm not sure if I have what it takes to handle the pain from these things.

I've been reading reviews on Amazon, seems people recommend Braun brand, and among those the Braun 5270 seems to be ranked the highest. Most all epilators by that company has good reviews from seasoned epi-users to newbies like me.

I'll probably wait a month or so before buying it and trying it out. I'm pretty gutless.

If I decide to buy a "bigger" one for the legs, I agree, the Braun definitely seems to be the best choice. I didn't even know anyone else made them.

I'd recommend buying one from a conventional store that accepts returns. But promise yourself to give it a few good tries before giving it up. The first time is truly the worst and it gets *tons* better after that.

And yes, I'm weird, I just couldn't get past the pain on the legs. But I'm willing to give it another go.
