SUSHI - version 2009

There hasn't been a sushi thread posted this year yet, so I'm making one. If it needs to be merged with an older one, that's cool.

I ADORE sushi. And it kills me as I've lost touch with all my friends who also love it. I introduced my parents and bf-sorta person months ago, but they weren't too hot on it. Now I have no one to go out and have sushi with.

When I do sushi, I do it right. Variety, and lots of it. And I cram that shit down until I'm hurting on my way out the door.

My list of must-have's:
  • seaweed salad
  • spider rolls (soft shell crab)
  • unagi nigiri (kinda like bbq freshwater eel)
  • shrimp tempura roll
  • california roll
  • lobster roll
  • salmon skin roll
  • spicy crawfish roll
What I will never have again:
  • sea urchin - I don't know if it was bad or if it really is supposed to taste like Mr. Clean and have the consistency of snot. It was horrible.
What do you order when you sushi out? What will you never order again? I wish there was a 24-hour sushi place around here. I'd so go by myself right now.

Whenever I go to Bangkok for lunch I always get the Hee-ma roll. That thing is soo wonderful. It's like a party in your mouth. I usually get it with a seaweed salad

oh wow, that sounds fabulous.

I forgot about dragon rolls - shrimp tempura, cucumber, cream cheese and eel.

One place I hit here adds cream cheese to a lot of their rolls. It's absolutely fantastic. Melts just a little - very good.

Good for you, but damn, that can add up $$$ quick!

I don't really have any favorites, but I like just about everything. As long as you are going to a place that has good sushi chefs and you know the seafood is fresh, (busy place, high turnover) you can't go wrong. Well, maybe with sea urchin... but I would try it at least once.

I got turned on to sushi in June while on a cruise. All I ever considered was "raw fish" as that is the first description I ever had. On the cruise I figured if I didn't like it big whoop, there was a boatload of food. I'm hooked now.

Closest place to me though is an hour away. But it is way cool. The sushi goes around on a little train and you take it off and are charged by the color of the plate.

I love pretty much all Sushi except BBQ Eel, would rather have it naturel than BBQ'd. I'm in love with it and when there's something new and exciting, I go for it... I really wish I was raised with more seafood in my diet.

Yes, it does lol. An old friend and I used to do this type of thing and we'd easily drop $50-$60 each after splitting the check. But those were very very satisfying nights lol.

I loves the sushi also. I can't quite deal with more than a few bites of spider roll, but the first few bites are awesome. I've tried sashimi (just hunks o' raw fish), but couldn't quite get around the texture. Other than that, I like pretty much everything.

Pretty much love all of it - there are sushi places everywhere in Sydney and both my boys love the rolls and also love going to the sushi train like Psycho Dad was talking about. Fresh sashimi (tuna or salmon) is fantastic - I also LLOOOVVVVEEEE wasabi - yum

I love the sushi.

When it comes down to it, I am much more a fan of sashimi than sushi (though I would never say no to a California roll).

The question isn't what will I eat but rather what won't I eat...

My favourite sashimi is toro (tuna belly).

Sashimi is fantastic. But that's where it gets super expensive. I'll get a few pieces when I go - usually tuna, red snapper and / or yellowtail.

I love living in Japan. I can go to the supermarket and get a pack of 8 peices for about $4. Or they have the more premium ones with 10-12 pieces, including uni and toro, for around $10. And of course, the sashimi rocks. We don't actually have many rolls here.

hmm... uni (sea urchin) is one of my favorites. I only order it at higher end sushi places though. It's taste (more than most sushi) really depends on the quality of the thing.

It's supposed to be creamy, and briny, so rich yet light... ahhh...like an orgasm on the tongue....

+1 for sashimi. Haven't met a one I didn't like. Favorite? Probably yellowtail, eel or snapper. Okay, so I can't make a decision.

I'll eat most any rolls because the sashimi gets costly. I usually skip those with cream cheese.

I do love me some sushi.

I like yellowtail a lot, and salmon, fatty tuna, snapper. I'm not big on eel, but I think that's because of the sauce it's always in.

I usually get an order of yellowtail sushi, salmon sushi, maybe shrimp sushi if I'm very hungry, a spicy shrimp roll, and a california roll. For a while I would also order one thing I'd never tried before, often server's or chef's choice. It worked well when we frequented the nearby funky, sexy sushi place with the triphop music and the hot waitresses.
