Photo Masking

When I download a photo from the internet that has parts of it masked (usually the face) it downloads ok and when I look at the thumbnail in the folder there is no masking ( it has gone), but when I open the thumbnail the masking re-appears. Is there anyway in which I can remove the masking so that the large picture is the same as the thumbnail?
Thanks for any help with this.

Sounds like the EXIF data for the image has an embedded thumbnail in it. Try looking for an EXIF editor or some such that can extract it. The embedded thumbnail is probably no larger than the thumbnail you are seeing in the folder so there is really no way to get the larger image stripped of masking. Those pixels were changed.
