Any Experts with MS Word (2007?) Functions

I have a project with some bizarre formal requirements. My professor tells me that there are specific functions in Word (as far back as Word 98) that allow users to "collate" separate documents into one single document. I have never heard of such a feature.

With this feature, we can update any document part of the main, and it will be updated in the master document, supposedly. In this master document, there must be continuous page numbering, the footer must contain the sub-document file name, the file name must include the revision number (therefore the master document must be edited to point to the newest document), and then in the master document create a table of contents.

Now searching through Word 2007, I have found the ToC function- simple enough, but not this document "collate" feature he assures me exists.

I think it's called Microsoft Binder? I remember trying to work with that at my old job, but I couldn't get tables from Excel to incorporate the way that I wanted them to. If you are simply doing Word chapters, and keep them distinct, Binder should work.

Microsoft's site says Binder was discontinued after '97. He says this is a feature that is even in the "newer" versions.

Ah. Well, we were using '97, so that's all I know. And searching on "Microsoft Binder replacement" doesn't seem to get me anywhere either... no, wait, try Create a master document and subdocuments - Word - Microsoft Office Online. Might that do it?

There is the master document feature which seems to be the only thing close to what my Prof was telling me about.

He assured me that the feature he uses allows him to import any MS office document... which Master-Doc. does not allow me to do- only MS word docs.

I will putz with Master-Document since it allows me to import new documents into it, or change the document. I think that will be easiest.

Thanks for the input thus far. I think that my Prof is just going a little senile.

I'm wondering if "linked object" http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...901591033.aspx is what you are looking for.
