how to get surround sound through a sound desk from a dvd player

Um, most regular DVD players output audio in 2 channels, left and right. You'd need a Home Theater system to have it in 5 channels, where the sound is actually different from each speaker and truly "surrounds" you.

Which DVD player? Many DVD players have HDMI, fiber optic, etc outputs in addition to composite and coaxial. You'll want a DVD player with HDMI or fiber optic, which carry more than 2 channels.

If your dvd player has 6 discrete analog channels of output and your board has 6 or more inputs that can buss to 6 outputs then you're good.

What kind of "sound desk" do you have?

What kind of dvd player do you have?

The question I have is: why? Why not just get a surround receiver and be done with it? Unless you're mixing for surround ...
