BMW owner tapes black car to white
When a BMW 335i owner in Munich became bored with his black coupe, he hired a team to wrap it in white tape. Two days later, he drove home in his refreshed "Alpine White" coupe (with an M3-appearing black roof). No, it's not normal tape. It's a special 3M wrap, and the process is known as "foiling." Apparently, the German military has been using the process (with an olive drab tape) for some time now. Likewise, the process is popular with race teams and taxi companies. Available in countless colors, the tape itself is thick enough to protect the paint from minor chips and nicks, and it can be left adhered to the surface for 3-4 years without damage (!). Adhesion isn't a problem either, as the tape can even withstand an automatic car wash without peeling off. Thanks for the tip Frank.
I do like the black roof for contrast... makes it look different.

Pretty inventive and more durable than a paint job, not to mention you can switch back when you want the original color back! Would you do this to your ride?

That's pretty awesome. The idea of being able to almost instantly change the color of your car whenever you want is pretty cool as well. I'd love to see where this technology goes, because if they can pull off the pearlescent or the chameleon effect colors that would be awesome.

I would - the micros scratches that we get here because of blownsand and salt are a real pain in the bum, and this would stop them.

Any idea on cost vs a re-spray?

If any of you saw the Taxi remake, the evil Portuguese models peel the wrap off of their 7-series to change the color and make a get-away.

I would, in fact I checked into it for an old beater of ours. I really wanted a De Stijl wrap, but there was no existing design and to start from scratch would have been expensive.

What a great idea! I like the idea of protecting the paint, and being able to peel it off every 3-5 years.
I would love to do something like this to my MINI:

I remember it from the Jackal, with Bruce Willis and Richard Gere. It's a fantastic way to add some security to your getaway car and from the pictures it looks pretty convincing.

That's pretty sweet.. I'm curious what the cost would really be from end to end.

It doesn't leave any residue upon removal?

It took two days to install? I'm sure its not a quick process to rip-off (certainly not like any movie would have us believe). Either way, this is great for racing (rally, and such) as it further protects panels from frequent dings, but also allows a separate surface (instead of the direct paint) to apply sponsor stickers and event stickers to.

Most of the wraps on our racecars were a couple thousand, but most of those were intricate logo setups. It was cheaper than airbrushing, and if it tagged a wall, it was repeatable. I'd imagine they look nice in a solid color. I've seen some crappy wraps, not texture wise, but done with some inadequate printing, so things looked grainy/pixellated.
