SRT-4 vs. Mazdaspeed 3 SHOW DOWN (Redjake vs. Lasereth!)

So Lasereth bought a brand spanking new Mazdaspeed 3. This weekend we are going to take to the back roads and have us a country showdown in rural North Carolina. Don't worry, the roads are clear of traffic and you can see a mile down the road.

Place your bets! We are both bone stock. I have a 2004 Dodge SRT-4.

Youtube video of me 0-70 MPH (sorry for bad quality, cell phone FTL!!!!!)

Edit: Details about the race!

We'll will be doing drags:
0 - 60 MPH
37 - 70 MPH
60-100 MPH
and a good, solid 0 - 100 MPH

Probably multiple pulls of each to weed out any flukes/bad driving.

How long is the race? Are there turns? How many? Details, man!

Without details, the SRT is slightly faster. Still, the performance stats are really similar. This will likely come down to the better driver.

I say the SRT-4 only because the MS3 is not built for drag racing. Part of it's traction control limits the amount of boost the turbo will produce through 1st and 2nd gears, which is all the advantage the SRT-4 needs.

OH, you're going to drag. The 0-60 of the SRT is faster by .5 seconds officially, but to be honest they're probably within .3 seconds of each other in reality. This is still going to be a close race that will likely come down to the driver.

That's my new car!! 2.3 liter 4-cylinder turbo, 263 horsepower and 280 ft-lbs of torque. 3,153 pounds.

I owned an SRT4 for a year and I can say that this car feels just as fast, but only a true race will tell.

Where in rural NC? That's key. There's a one mile straight stretch near where I went to school on Stanly County. A friend of mine got his Camaro up to 140mph on it.

It was a modified.

The SRT-4 is technically faster especially in a straight line but only by the smallest amount. It will come purely down to driver, conditions and state of the vehicles.

I'm going with Las here. His new car is in naturally better condition. In such a close race, it will matter.

I just hope both of you come back.

Last night me and my brother raced his 04 SRT4 and my 08 MS3 for over an hour. From a dig, 30 roll, 40 roll, 50 roll, 60, 70, and we did each test multiple times testing different gears, etc.

From a dig: SRT4 wins consistently by half a car length, so pretty much the best shifter wins (we are side by side the whole race).

From a 30 roll: dead equal, MS3 pulls ahead by half a car at times but the SRT4 catches up during the 2nd and 3rd power bands, usually MS3 is ahead by half a car length at the end

From a 40 roll: SRT4 wins by half a car length obviously, 40 roll in SRT4 is absolutely vicious

50, 60, 70 roll: dead equal, 60 roll sometimes the MS3 would win by half a car

See any consistencies? Every race we did the car that won only won by half a car length which can be attributed to shifting. So those that chose the race to be a draw were right!!!!!!

Would you consider swapping drivers? would it even make a difference?...based on your report, it seems that would result in the same outcome.

Is there no test and tune tracks in north carolina where this can be settled legally and safely? I hate to be the wet blanket but this is both dangerous and highly illegal, and frankly I'm dissapointed it's gone on this long on such an otherwise mature board.

there's a difference between street racing safely (yes, there is such a thing) and street racing unsafely. I'm not saying street racing is right, nor do I condone it, but one thing we make sure to do is to ensure no one else could be put in danger. All of the areas we tested in were free of traffic on and long straightaways where no one could surprise you around a curve. please stop stereotyping us with The Fast and the Furious.

we are both experienced drivers and know how to react in a dangerous situation if it arose as well.

I am not stereotyping you with the Fast and the Furious--do knee jerk F&F haters know about test and tune tracks, where you can legally in a controlled environment decide who is faster for $20? I'm an administrator on a statewide car enthusiast board with a strict policy against illegal street racing, so if you were on my board I'd ban both of you. Nevertheless, not my board, not my rules, whatever. We've had too many friends wrap their shit around trees and poles in our formative years to think there is any such thing as 'safe' racing.

Good luck, carry on, sorry I tried to rain on your parade.

What purpose does the ban-hammer threat serve? If we just happened to be on your board discussing something that was obviously against the rules we would be banned? No crap.

Your friends wrapped "their shit" around trees and poles because they didn't take the necessary precautions prior to their joy ride. Probably didn't know how to react if something interfered with the race as well. In the locations we tested our cars, there's no way we could wreck our cars, simply no way. If we got a flat, pull over. If a deer jumped out, hit it or swerve if no one is beside you. If you lose control for whatever reason, don't oversteer or understeer and keep your cool.

And yes, I've been in multiple situations where I lost control of my car (for whatever reason, hydroplane, tires locked up, someone pulled out in front of me) and successfully contained the situation without any harsh results. I know how to drive.

I doubt we would lose control on a mile long stretch of straight expressway, though. And if we did, there are guard rails.

I appreciate your concern but you are still stereotyping us with the masses who street race. We do this in a controlled environment with no bystanders.
