It didn't even happen during the hatchback run up of the late 80's when the GTI's and Civics were running supreme. I know that Renault and Peuguot aren't coming to our shores soon.

There are Spanish, German and Japanese boxes which are very hot.

I wish it was cheaper and easier to get vehicles from Europe. I'd kill for a Panda or a Fiat 500.

Hatchbacks have never been popular here. Why, I don't know.
I'd happily buy a hatchback that has good road manners and can take a corner well. Unfortunatly, the US has latched onto a "bigger is better" mentality. Because of this, the major players won't invest in hot hatches. Leaves a major gap in the lineups.
