Inventive and innovative music videos

It seems to me that there isn't enough music videos that get any real airplay.

Find interesting and inventive ones and post them here. If you can add something to it like a little information about the band, song, where you heard the song the first time, anything to spur more discussion than just posting a youtube link or embed.

The moment I saw this I thought it to be very inventive and innovative. It instantly made me think that someone should do a narrative or at least video score of Star Wars with this popup book...

I just came across this one through the MacUser RSS feed. The song is kind of dull, but the video....

I don't think I could have possibly found another technology in Leopard to use to fit into this video.

I happened across this at 3am after watching too many scary movies.

I think I stopped breathing for the whole thing, jesus, it's cool and freaky at the same time.

I don't really watch music videos much, but I've always thought The Strokes do some of the most well-done, interesting ones.

My favorite:

A little dated, but... Money for Nothing by Dire Straits...

The first music video on MTV Europe, the second computer generated music video shown on MTV...

The lyrics are more disturbing that I remembered...

On the other side: A bit of a "fuck you" to music videos in general: The Replacements - Bastards of Young (1985)

It's interesting to me because it doesn't focus at all on the band (visually anyway) unlike many of the music videos of the time.

I've long believed that some of the most innovative videos are born out of necessity; that is to say, bands who don't have huge budgets to create crazy special effects or get lots of extras or what have you have to do something original in order to make their video interesting.

In that vein I present Lovers In A Dangerous Time, by the Barenaked Ladies. This is from back in the Gordon days, long before anyone in the US (or even very many people in Canada) had heard of them. It's visually interesting, often amusing and distinctly Canadian.

Derwood made me think of Cake. Short Skirt/Long Jacket:

And I don't want to spam these guys, but they really do a lot of creative things with their videos so it's a bit hard not to. Barenaked Ladies, Testing 1, 2, 3:

Music Video Constructed from London's Surveillance Cameras

The Get Out Clause has too strong a ColdPlay gene for us to truly appreciate them on the merits of their music, but the way they made the music video for "Paper" was pure brilliance. Nearly the entire video was captured using the British government's closed-circuit surveillance cameras.

As part of the UK's apparent drive to become a full-fledged police state, the British government has installed these cameras all over the place, reportedly driving some youths to wear cavernous hoodies to make it harder for would-be overlords to track their movement and behavior. There are so many cameras in London that the average person on the street has their photo taken by the government approximately every six seconds. In return for these repeated invasions of privacy, only three percent of the country's solved crimes have apparently involved evidence gathered from the cameras.

At least citizens are allowed to request any footage in which they appeared within the last 30 days. The Get Out Clause used this aspect of the law to their advantage, getting the city to film its music video for free -- a serious bargain, considering that the video is practically guaranteed to go viral.

L-O-M: I initially thought that your 4th post (the train ride) was the stupidest video ever; just a guy sticking a camcorder out of a train window. Then I figured out what was going on. Whoa. (I didn't get it until about 1:15.)

that vid does glitch a fair bit but you have to look closely to see it most of the time.

i thought sébastian tellier´s eurovision entry was brilliant but the actual film clip for the song does the impossible: it´s better!

what happens when you get hold of someone´s photo albums from the 60s and 70s:

I just found a second version of that Do It Again video I posted above, this time done with Windows XP:

Spoiler: I don't really think XP is that bad. Please do not start a Mac/PC flamewar.

!!! Don't dis' The Bird and the Bee! Granted, Fucking Boyfriend is more fun a song than Again & Again, but I wouldn't call the song dull, just....chill

Anyway, that was a pretty fun video, and I especially liked the iTunes Music Store touch at the end (It should be noted that the Mac video isn't the for the song, which makes it even more impressive in my mind considering that a fan put that together. Cute girl too...I'd like to see more of her. A lot more. )

Cynthetiq: The Shitdisco video was also very fun!

Shauk: sorta creepy...definitely would be more creepy on a TV instead of a small youtube box, and at 3am. Who is it?

Punk.of.Ages: yours no longer works

sapiens: Money for Nothing and Sledgehammer are two of the most revolutionary music videos that have been made. Classics. Considering the context, The Replacements' video is pretty great as well.

Martian: the video doesn't really stick out to me, but it's interesting to see Barenaked Ladies in a bit of a different light. Your videos in post #12 no longer work.

Derwood: yours doesn't work anymore either :/

Cynthetiq: the video in post #13 doesn't work, but it sounds really interesting! (and scary...the CCTV is a major roadblock to any interest I have in moving to the UK)

lotsofmagnets: none of your videos work anymore I think I recognized the image shown for the first video, but I can't tell since it wouldn't play.

Redlemon: the XP video doesn't work either.

As for posting some innovative videos myself, I'm gonna have to think about this a bit. The ones that immediately come to my mind are a bit cliche at this point, and those are Tool's videos, particularly for Schism. I'll see what others I can think of.

SM: I think you have issues on your installation; all the YouTube links that you say are down, are still up for me. Or YouTube had a momentary glitch when you tried to play them.

i've put these up before, i'm pretty sure...

cibo matto: sugar water.

i am a big michel gondry fan.
this is my favorite of his videos.

cornelius is so great, and his videos are consistently cool.
here are a couple examples:

omstart

like a rolling stone

both videos by koichiro tsujikawa

one more...
another view point

that last song reminded me of stereolab.
noise of the carpet:

o yeah-- i still think this started the whole video thing--serge gainsbourg and brigitte bardot, bonnie et clyde (1968)
