Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that according to Favre's agent, Buss Cook, Favre informed Packers coach Mike McCarthy of his decision Monday night.
A sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famer, Favre, acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons, led the Packers back to the NFL's elite. He retires with 5,377 carrer completions in 8,758 attempts for 61,655 yards, 442 touchdowns and 288 interceptions, passing Dan Marino's touchdown mark last season.
As a player Favre was known for his durability, his willingness to take risks and turn broken plays into big gains and the way his love for the game was evident in the way he played. He went to a pair of Super Bowls in 1996 and 1997, winning it all on his first try, as well as nine Pro Bowls.

Cook said as of Tuesday morning, there were no plans for Favre to hold a news conference.

Favre, who returned for the 2007 season when many thought he should have left the game, had a career renaissance in his final season and led the Packers to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants in overtime.

Mortensen reported that Favre, who wanted the Packers to obtain Randy Moss when he was a free agent last season, had once again pushed for Moss to join the Packers. Favre had spoken to Moss late last week and was willing to commit to more than just this season if Moss and the Packers could come to an agreement. But the Packers did not pursue Moss, who re-signed with the Patriots on Monday.

Even a Chicago fan has to admit that Favre was one of the greatest; his talent and love of the game, charisma and leadership skills on and off the field. It is bigger then team rivalries.

I have been saying that even after this year Favre should retire; Rodgers is the future and is tired of riding the bench I'm sure. It's hard to let go of your hero though.

I really liked Favre, thought he was a good QB, but no way the best ever.

All too often he would (in the later stages of his career) throw between 2894784502398208975047903825509 defenders to his guy who fell down and get upset if the ball got picked off, almost like the pass would be complete because he was Brett Favre.

Good guy? Yes, probably one of the best. Will he be missed in the locker room and on the field? Yes.

Yeah Redlemon, people speculated that because he had openly campaigned for Moss last year, and then criticized the franchise for not picking him up when they could of, that he was asking for a trade. The first two things being true, but the trade being only rumor, it seemed only likely that he would do the same again this year.

But it's not the direction that Ted Thompson (GM) is going. He builds young, speedy, west coast offenses, and builds from the line out. Moss was an expensive thing they certainly didn't need (They have Greg Jennings, and an under appreciated Koren Robinson, as well as two very young but very talented players in James Jones and Ruvell Martin) that would have brought the team back to a vertical pass threat team. Moss is more of a deep threat then a possession receiver in IMO. It might have secured Favre, but it didn't make sense and didn't fit the team. If Favre left because of that it would of been selfish.

I would of loved to see those two together, it would of probably meant MVP number four and maybe another super bowl ring. I don't think anyone throws a deep ball like Favre and with the line emerging as one of the best, most underrated group of practical nobodies then he would of had the time to bomb it. Yet, that is a very short term goal and would likely hinder the growth of players who are starting to shine; especially Greg Jennings.

I hope that's not why Favre left, but if it was, then I think it would of had more to do with being done with the game, and not with being a pompous prick. People at that age need personal incentives to keep going through the grueling physical and mental work needed. Maybe that was his reward that he deserved in his head, and when he didn't, he said "well maybe it's not worth it" instead of "Fuck you Thompson, thanks for nothing." Either way next year won't be the same.

I see it as "I'm pretty much done. If I had Moss, it would be a fun toy to play with for one more year. I don't, so I guess this is the end." I don't envision it as petty at all.

I couldn't even bring myself to start this thread.

I had a feeling that this might happen since he did have a great 07 season but I hoped that it wouldn't. Favre, for me was more than a quarterback, he was a common man that didnt get a big head nor look for big paydays like the other (Remain nameless as not to offend other fans) quaterbacks. He played because he wanted to not because he needed to. To watch him play reminded me of when I used to play. IT WAS FUN!!! That's it!! Plain and simple fun.

Thank you Brett for sharing the fun you had on the field with those of us that wanted to be there as well!!!

I'm watching the press conference right now and he is just shinning as himself. He cried over leaving and laughed when he answered "what are looking forward to doing..." with an interrupting "nothin'". I'm hoping he gets into analyst work or coaching but it seems very unlikely. Hard day.

I am an old guy, well almost 40, and I won't ever see another Favre in my lifetime at Green Bay, I never did before him and never will after him. We can just consider ourselves lucky we were into it when he was!!

Okay so this needs to be brought up.

Over the past two weeks now there has been endless speculation on whether or not Favre had been considering returning. It started out as a talk, then a serious conversation, his brother commits to "50-50 chance of playing", Adam Schefter is saying 80% chance on the NFL Network, now there is serious momentum behind the chance that he might be sending a letter of intention to the Pack in the next week to be added to the active roster.

I don't know how to feel about this because there isn't really a clear cut answer. There are three possible things that can happen here if you ask me, only two of them are likely, one of them the most likely.

A) He'll take over again at starting quaterback. This wouldn't be horrible; Favre is a wonderful Quarterback who can put the ball into some tight spots and make bombs like no one else in the league. Favre also has a kind of magic and playing style that leads to some serious comebacks which we saw a lot of last year. There is also the uncertainty of Rodgers playing to his full potential. I like what I'm seeing but the only thing I'm worried about is him getting injured and having my boys pull a Panthers with Brohm.

B) He'll be traded. This seems the most likely right now. Most of the Pack are saying, although with very few words, that they have moved on and I think they are completely justified. Yes, to a hoard of fans, Brett is the second coming of Jesus Christ. I don't believe for a minute that they were "pushing him out the door"; sounds like a Bus Cook drama queen line. But I watched his Press Conference and I was convinced; I bet they were too. Listen, I love Favre, he is my hero (I mean look at my avatar), but after implementing a whole new "evolved" offense for Aaron I have to think the trade is inevitable. And they would have to play this well. He demands a first round pick, and most likely to someone like the Texans or Carolina, hopefully Baltimore. Keep him in the AFC, with a team that won't play the Pack because that would be a nightmare.

C) The release him. Stupid! Any three of the other NFC North teams are probably drooling to get their hands on Favre. Releasing him would mean having to play him in either Orange and Blue, Blue and Silver, or Purple and Yellow; the last being the worst one because all they are missing is a solid Quarterback and I don't want to give him one of the best of all time.

Personally I don't know how to feel about this. I know logically it's Rodgers' time to shine; he's put in his time and deserves his long awaited shot. But Favre pulls at my heartstrings. Its like a relationship with a girlfriend you know should end but continue out of fear of the future and the comfortable nature of the current situation. It doesn't help that he is America's hero/one of the best quarterbacks of all time.

This is such a fucking hot mess. What do you guys think?

Nothing good can come of this. Green Bay is already developing an offense around Rodgers. For Favre to end his career in something other than a Green Bay uniform is just.... wrong. And I'm not even a fan.

He won't sit back and be a mentor to Rodgers. He'll have to start somewhere.

Hopefully he'll just stay retired.

It's not win/win. The teams most likely to actively pursue Favre are The Bears, The Vikings, and The Lions. How scary would the Vikes be with Favre behind center. Have you no confidence in the abilities of Kyle Rodgers? Even if the Bears, Vikings, and Lions did get Farve, how long do you think he can play at a championship level?

I'd be thinking differently about it if he wasn't so old. He's at the Vinny Testeverde stage in his career. Keeping him in a Green Bay uniform does a disservice to the team because they can't plan for the future around Rodgers, and it's a disservice to Rodgers to have him ride the bench for another season.

I don't want Favre to stay with the Packers; the team took his retirement seriously, and moved on to Aaron. Aaron is going to be more then capable but this situation is a lot more complicated then what you're making it.

The Packers are poised in their division to do some great things. In fact the only thing that really stands in their way is The Vikes, and without a capable quarterback they are less likely to hinder my team's success. The Pack aren't going to be great forever. Seasons will change my team, they always do, and who's to say how long the window for success will be open. Favre moving to any team in the NFC North would be a disaster; moving to any team we play would be almost as bad.

But that is just on the field. Off the field this is even worse. The Packers have been put in a very bad position by Brett (and God knows, and every girlfriend I've ever had, I love him). Ted mishandles this and he's fucked; the fans own the team for god sakes. He's fucked if he refuses to bow to Favre because then he is muddying one of the greats, and perhaps the favorite of all pack fans. If they release him, and he goes to the vikes or even the bears, then he may be losing his potentially great season.

ALSO if he just releases Favre, without pursuing a trade, then he is fucked (for getting Brett/the fans ruffled) and he gets nothing to show for it (like Montana's first round trade; which is what we need).

The best thing to do is to do what they did with Corey Williams in the offseason. They tied Corey to their team (he was an unrestricted free agent) and then traded him for high value. The Pack should reinstate him, then trade him. If nothing comes up, release him as he wishes. That way is a win/win; as much as you could in this mess.

I love Brett, he is my hero, but I'm going to call it like it is and call this selfish.

Sure, I think we all know that if he played for a team that needs a QB next season, he'd immediately make that team 2-3 wins better, but I doubt he'd put up the kind of numbers he put up last season.

Come on Brett. Everyone likes you, but don't do this to us NFL fans. We'd have to put up with endless media coverage and speculation about his return, and eventually round 2 of "is he/is he not retiring?"

In the long term I dont think it effects his status as a legend and hero of that team - but it was right that he retires as a Packers player, and also retires on the back of a good season and playing well.

Aaron is going to be more then capable but this situation is a lot more complicated then what you're making it. The Packers are poised in their division to do some great things. In fact the only thing that really stands in their way is The Vikes, and without a capable quarterback they are less likely to hinder my team's success. The Pack aren't going to be great forever. Seasons will change my team, they always do, and who's to say how long the window for success will be open. Favre moving to any team in the NFC North would be a disaster; moving to any team we play would be almost as bad. But that is just on the field. Off the field this is even worse. The Packers have been put in a very bad position by Brett (and God knows, and every girlfriend I've ever had, I love him). Ted mishandles this and he's fucked; the fans own the team for god sakes. He's fucked if he refuses to bow to Favre because then he is muddying one of the greats, and perhaps the favorite of all pack fans. If they release him, and he goes to the vikes or even the bears, then he may be losing his potentially great season. ALSO if he just releases Favre, without pursuing a trade, then he is fucked (for getting Brett/the fans ruffled) and he gets nothing to show for it (like Montana's first round trade; which is what we need). The best thing to do is to do what they did with Corey Williams in the offseason. They tied Corey to their team (he was an unrestricted free agent) and then traded him for high value. The Pack should reinstate him, then trade him. If nothing comes up, release him as he wishes. That way is a win/win; as much as you could in this mess. yellowmac Insane Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: left coast	I wish Favre would just commit to his decision... by doing this, isn't he essentially betraying a vast majority of his fans back in Green Bay? Does he really want to do that to his legacy for one more season? Sure, I think we all know that if he played for a team that needs a QB next season, he'd immediately make that team 2-3 wins better, but I doubt he'd put up the kind of numbers he put up last season. Come on Brett. Everyone likes you, but don't do this to us NFL fans. We'd have to put up with endless media coverage and speculation about his return, and eventually round 2 of "is he/is he not retiring?"
