I have tried a few times and cannot get onto the chat. I am not very knowledgable about computers and I was wondering If there is something more I could try than simply pressing 'chat' and crossing my fingers

It sounds like you're using Internet Explorer and your security settings for Java are set too high. You're going to either have to lower the settings or try a different web browser. You could also download a chat client and visit with that. Secretmethod created a great guide to downloading and installing a chat client in this thread.
