Now I'll admit it's been a long time since math class, but something there doesn't seem to add up.

I have no other folders and am not squirreling hidden messages away anywhere, so far as I know.

On the left, try clicking on "track messages". If you see anything in there, delete it all since I'm pretty sure that message tracking is no longer enabled anyway. That might be where the missing messages are.

Nothing in there either. The only messages I'm able to find are in my inbox and sent items. Any other little nooks I might've missed?

I've actually been aware of the discrepancy for a while now. I think it first appeard when Halx did that cull a while back; a the time I did have 150-odd private messages stored and it seems like there's some sort of a database error where a number of my old messages got culled and the overall total wasn't updated. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it any time soon, since I doubt I'll ever have 400 messages in there anyway, but I figured it's probably time to report it.

I have 31 and 32 and it says that I have 95 total. I believe the messages cut off after a certain time and simply don't display on the message list. That's the only explanation I can think of.

The total includes those in your "inbox", the ones you have recieved, as well as those you have sent to others, stored in what is known as the "outbox".

Delete the latter first. You may have that discrepancy and it shows those already gone, so I don't know much more than that.

Jetee, the problem is that the two totals from each catagory (inbox and outbox) don't match the total amount stored shown in the header.

only thing I can think of is when you guys did that database purge of old attatchments/pm's or whatever, it didn't update the counter? I really don't know.

So without word from an Admin as of yet, most of you are left wondering if it is solely the counter that has not been corrected, or if the messages now gone are stored in some sort of "limbo box".

I know I deleted about a hundred messages a few months ago, so I figure they're in some non-visible holding folder.

Edit: Whoa. I deleted one message in my inbox, to see what effect it had, and it seems to have fixed it. Everyone else should try it...doesn't answer the original question as to Why though

yeah, the counters weren't reset when the messages were purged. Making small changes will reset your individual counters. The reason why I dont reset counters is because it would take DAYS for it to run, and it would reduce post counts.

So, it appears that ya'll you are being given credit for more pms than you actually have.

I'm kinda new here...is there any chance the admins of this site are in the banking business? If so, I'd definitely be interested in setting up a checking account.

Haha...the equivalent is that a big automatic withdrawl came out (when Hal deleted all PM's older than...2005, was it?), and the amounts in your checking and savings updated appropriately, but the line where the total amount displayed in your online accounts didn't change, until you made a smaller withdrawl from either account.

I'd be pretty pissed if my bank did that, actually
