Changing your username

If you are looking to change your username, we have a few guidelines we generally like to follow:
  1. Any request for a name change should be sent to an admin via private message. (List of all mods and admins can be found here)
  2. The PM should include the reason why you want to change your username.
  3. We won't allow multiple name changes, so make sure you really want to change your name.

It can be disconcerting when a user changes their name, especially if you miss their announcement of it.

Perhaps this thread could also include a list of old->new usernames?

Whenever I've changed someone's user name, I've usually had them put something in their sig or user title for a little while to signify the change.

Ah, then it's my problem - I turn off signatures.

I have noticed that journal still shows the author as my old user name.

The active user list is never alphabetical - it always puts your name first.

I'm touched that you've marked me as a buddy, though.

Huh, my old name always having been in the front, I always assumed it was alphabetical given the order of the rest of the list.

//laughs// Don't mention it.

I somehow missed this before, but having seen it, suddenly your own signature makes sense. I always just assumed you were being ornery.

How would you just delete your account all together? Would that also delete any forum topics/replies that have been posted by the user?

no, it actually would vandalize the board and make it unreadable. As a policy we do not do such things as deleting member accounts.

I signed up months ago, but never used this board. Got a password reset notification recently; I'd like to delete my account. After searching around on the board this thread seems to be the best info on how to delete an account. I'm not sure I buy your explanation for why this isn't possible: isn't it just a matter of wacking a row in a few tables?

It's not nearly as simple as you think. If we delete accounts, posts go with them. That messes up threads and means that folks like me have to reconstruct them. I'm inherently lazy, not to mentioned overworked already, so there's no chance that you're going to convince me to completely delete an account when there are other tools to be used.

Let me know if you really want to completely use access and I'll explain your options.

I do want to permanently lose access. I have never posted till now, so you've only got one thread to preserve in your db. Thanks for considering my request, let me know if there's anything else I can do to facilitate.

---------- Post added at 06:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:43 PM ----------

Also, i'm open to whatever the "other tools" are you mention. I just don't want to get email from activity on an account that I never use, so if truly deleting it is prohibitivly difficult i'm open to options.

Sorry for the intrusion. I was doing the due diligence in maintaining a safe system. You had used your username as your password and it came up in the maintenance I was doing today.

Yes, we don't delete users, not even spammers. It's a simple policy that has reasons that maybe only admins seem to care and understand. Since Jazz has already offered to assist, I'll let him finish with you.

thanks.
