Has the ability to directly embed swf files into a thread vs posting a link been discontinued?

yes. it has been discontinued, there are too many exploits out there.
most of the media types will just auto embed like youtube and such with no intervention from the user except just putting in the URL, the system will do the rest. if it doesn't, then it isn't part of the list and can only be done via URL.
