Damaged Video Files

Every once in a while, I'll download a video file (mpg, avi, etc) that will play okay but shows that it is 0m0s in length, stays that value while it's playing, and the time-line bar for it stays still while it's playing. The video plays fine, but I cannot jump around its time line.

If I try to import it into Windows Movie Maker to see if I can convert it, but WMM says the movie is empty and doesn't do anything.

Is there any way to correct these files?

thanks
