CD-R drive not opening

My CD-R drive is not opening. I press the button and no light even flickers. I called Gateway and they said that I need to install the drivers from the CD that came with the computer. I do not have access to those CDs because they are in another state. Is there anyway to get the drivers for this drive online? I opened it up and I found a number on the drive but wasn't sure if it was the model number. I searched for that model number online but to no avail. The drive is made by Philips if this helps. How do I check to see if it is even a driver problem??

When you opened it up, did you check to make sure the cables, especially the power one, were firmly connected?

Does the light ever come on at any point? Like, while turning the computer on, as it boots, etc?

I highly doubt it is a driver problem if it won't open period.

Ok so let me get this straight, the gateway helpdesk told you that you can't open your cd drive because you don't have the drivers installed....

Sorry dude, this is a hardware fault, not a drivers fault - there are no drivers for cd drives anyhow.

Try unfolding a paper clip and sticking it in the hole in the front of the bezel of your drive, this manually disengages the locking mechanism - the cd tray should either just pop open, or the motor will drive it the whole way out if the computer is on.

If it doesn't, means that the cd motor is porked. More or less. You might be lucky and the rubber band has popped off, with a bit of maneuvering you could get it back on.

My only other suggestion is it's time for a DVD writer combo drive! They are great, i got a pioneer one for my birthday not so long ago - FANTASTIC.

Oh and, never call gateway ever again. Ever. That's shocking.

well it actually could be a software issue, i highly doubt it but it could be.

as the computer is booting, before you get to the windows loading screen, press the button.

fenagle it for a few minutes, but most likely its dead, you can get a new one for dirt cheep anyways.
