Say Hello to iMac 4

Apple Inc. released information at www.apple.com today about the new iMac, to be introduced tomorrow by Steve Jobs in one of those love em or hate em keynote speeches. I love them, btw. The new imac features a new look, thinner, with a brushed aluminum and black glass exterior, holding some very impressive specs. The iMac now sports a 2.4-2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, up to 4 GB of RAM, up to 1 TB HD, up to an ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB of GDDR3 video card, 802.11n wireless, and a great new keyboard.

Prices start at $1199. Note: the Apple store is currently under construction. It should be up before tomorrow at 10:00 AM Pacific time when the keynote speech will be delivered.

I'm going to buy one.

Those do look so much better than the old iMacs.

Yes, it appears that the white color scheme is now being replaced by the black glass/brushed aluminum look of the iPhone. Spoiler alert: the new iPod will adopt this look, and you can possibly expect it before Q1 of 08.

www.apple.com/store is now up and running featuring the new iMac and iLife '08.

My configuration:
iMac 24"
2.8 GHz Core 2 Extreme
4 GB Ram
750 GB HD
Apple Wireless Keyboard

Total: $3,179.00

I'll post pics in a few months when it's sitting on my desk.

Edit: I'm shocked at how relatively cheap these are. We're looking at a serious price drop on the unit relative to features and specifications.

I can't tell how the keyboard looks or works. It appears like it's more of a laptop keyboard style with a smaller range of motion on the keys. Definitely wish my fiancee's mom had waited to get me a new iPod for a few months if that's what the new ones will look like, but I got one of the black ones anyway, so no harm no foul.

I just published a brief article about it. Feel free to check it out. Note, this is not a digg request, necessarily. Feel free to digg or not digg at your discretion. I just have a bit more information in the article.

I like...

I was looking at the lowest end MBP, but the MBP would still be pricier and I have to wonder when the next update to the line will occur...

Damn you, Apple!

I keep an eye on Mac Buyer's Guide: Know When to Buy Your Mac when I'm considering a purchase. Also lists iPods and other Apple products. (I'm hoping the next iPod release will be similar to the iPhone; current thoughts are a September release.)

Will, I saw one of these in an Apple Store yesterday. I think you'll be very pleased - it's a beautiful machine!

They are pretty, but with computer life spans being ~1/3 that of displays, I can't get my brain around the economics of all-in-ones.

Did I already say those are pretty?

I can....At work, I currently use a circa 2000 Power Mac 400Mhz (256mb RAM, 10gb hd) machine. It runs the current OS X (albeit a bit slowly) and every piece of software I've thrown at it, including the most current version of QuarkXPress. I'd be confident in buying an all-in-one; I'd be more concerned with the display than with the other stuff.

Just to be sure, by lifespan I meant pleasant performance vs. demands lifespan. Monitors have a bit of that from increasing expectations and perhaps some fuzzies, but otherwise they keep displaying whatever you throw at them. I'd hate to see one of those 20 or 24's devalued by the CPU. Yes, this is more of a factor in the PC world of high-turnover $200 boxes.

Psst! Tell your boss the first generation of C2D boxes are a bargain as refurbs!

I was more or less hinting at the good value we seem to get from the Mac machines. Could you imagine booting Windows XP on 400MHz and 256MB RAM... on a 10GB HD?! Vista would be out of the question.

Thanks for the tip. Is it anything like this one?

17" iMac 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/512MB RAM/160GB HD CDN$1,099
I think that's new too. I would easily pay that for this machine.

The new 2.8GHz model sells for CDN$2,449 at the same store here.
