The Open Source/Freeware/Gratis Software Thread
So there is a great Open Source/Freeware development community out there, their projects are usually as good and often better than expensive software. The problem is, they don't make money like popular software, and aren't talked about as much, so it's harder to find them.
That's where this thread comes in: let's compile a list of the best freeware/Open Source programs of all kinds, with quick descriptions, updates, links, notes (like OS compatibility, versions, etc). Everyone can add their opinions, and ratings for programs and make new suggestions, or PM me, and I'll edit this post to show updates to the list. Also, please make requests for what type of freeware/Open Source application you are looking for, I'll keep a list of that as well. I'd like to see conversations about which program works best, user-friendliness, etc. Let's go: (For simplicity/readability purposes, I have hidden the list, you can show each section individually by clicking it.) Quote:
Augi's main post! Full of great, free, awesome recommendations for your Open Source needs Thanks to everyone who helped build this list, I encourage everyone to submit new suggestions, requests, etc.

Audacity Audio Editor
Audacity is easily the best free audio editor I've ever used. Tons of features, import/export various formats and it's easy to use.

Gimp is a freeware, cross-platform alternative to something like Photoshop. It doesn't have nearly as many features, but the basic functionality is there.
And while Filezilla is a good free FTP solution, Mac users might want to try Cyberduck--if not for the quality, then at least for the name. And, yes, there really is a duck.

For myself, almost everything on the machine (except Windows and Office which came with the machine) is freeware/Open source. Some of the good ones have already been mentioned. Others I like to use are:
1) HTML-KIT http://www.htmlkit.com/ Text editor/HTML/PHP/general purpose coding. It's KILLER feature is the ability to edit files on servers remotely. That way I don't have to connect to the server, download the file, make the changes, save and upload the file. Saves a tremendous amount of time. Plus it has plug-ins for almost anything you can think of 2) Exact Audio Copy (EAC) Exact Audio Copy CD ripper/encoder This is the Cadillac of CD rippers. It just won't give up -- put in a scratched up CD and if this can't get out the music, nothing will. Fast and does encoding, tags and everything else 3) HydraIRC http://www.hydrairc.com/ IRC client. If you know or use IRC then you'll appreciate Hydra IRC. Nuff said. 4) BurnAtOnce Burn At Once Very simple CD mastering/burning software. Does audio and data CDs with ease. If you're looking for something to burn DVDs with, try deepburn - the free version http://www.deepburner.com/?r=download 5) PDF Creator http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ Free program to create PDFs. It installs a virtual printer on your machine that when you select it, the output is the PDF. Fast, reliable, just plain awesome. Those are all the ones I can think of for now. ExactAudioCopy is definitely the best audio ripper out there, and jiGGafellz' Step-by-Step Guide to Secure CD Ripping makes setting it up for the best result nice and easy!

I'm a big fan of TagScanner for audio tag editing
For playing audio, MediaMonkey was fairly popular among OiNK users, though I have to admit I haven't tried it out yet.

GOM Player (Gretech Online Movie Player) is a freeware media player for Microsoft Windows. Key strengths are the ability to play the majority of media files without the need to obtain a codec, and the ability to play some broken media files, both advantages over traditional players This plays literally any video, it plays broken video files as well... this is the best media player out there

Miro is a "free, open source internet tv and video player." It's great if you're like me and don't have cable, or you don't like planning your life around the TV guide or fiddling with recording devices.
It's full featured and easy to organize--similar to RSS clients. There's even HD options. Be sure to check out the Miro tutorial videos available. Available for both Mac OS X and Windows.

A few that I don't see mentioned:
Image Apps: Inkscape - A free vector graphics editor. Lots of fun to play with, similar to Illustrator or CorelDraw Office: Abiword - Just the 'Word processor' portion of the Office Suite idea, but much faster, smaller, and lighter weight than either Open Office Writer or MS Word. Games: Battle For Wesnoth - Fun, multiplayer turn-based strategy. OSes: Fedora - Another Linux distribution, concentrating on being pure free/open source, including a completely open development process, with a rapid release/development cycle. SuSE - Yet another Linux distro. Not personally very familiar with it, but also well thought-of. By the by, all of the linux distros mentioned include a 'livecd' option, so you can try them out without installing anything. Also, as a minor nit, the OP doesn't really make a distinction between Free as in beer and Free as in Freedom. Here's an essay that explains the difference, and why it matters. |

Oh, I noticed '-Movie editing' in the requests section, and that reminds me of these two:
Kino - Video editing for linux. Simple interface, seems pretty intuitive to me. Not nearly as feature-ful as the 'big' editors, though. Cinelerra - A much more advance video editing program for linux. Much too complicated for the simple stuff that I do, and my very limited skillset. Seems impressive, but the interface (to me) is way to confusing. |

I agree, I've been using it to record my vinyl onto my computer so that I can covert the wave files to MP3s and put into player. Before I convert them, I burn the .wav files onto CDs and print cover art, so that I have a CD version of my album too. |

Wow, amazing responses. It has been a really long time since I updated the OP, I apologize, I've been pretty busy.
Time for some updating, possibly some new categories/reorganizing. Thanks so much, you guys. Free is truly awesome. EDIT: Added some more. Thanks guys. Will edit to add more of people's recommendations, hopefully soon. Quote:

Anyone know of any project management software? Especially for Mac? I'm currently trying out GanttProject.
I'll let you know how it turns out.

If you are using IE instead of Firefox I suggest getting IE7Pro which will give you many of the same features that make Firefox so nice to use.
Enhance Internet Explorer's Tabbed Browsing Capabilities 1. Double click to close tab. 2. Open new tab from address bar. 3. Enable/disable tab browse history manager. 4. Enable/disable crash recovery 5. Move the IE menu bar above the address bar 6. Hide search bar. 7. Modify the maximum number of parallel connections to the web server. 8. Select the external program to view page source Super Drag and Drop With Super Drag and Drop enabled, you can open new links by simply dragging and dropping the link on the page. You can also Drag and Drop to search selected words with the default search engine or save the selected photo when Shift is held down. Mouse Gesture Mouse Gesture allow the user to execute commonly performed tasks (open/close a tab, go back, go forward , print , scrolling page etc.) by drawing a simple symbol on the screen. Crash Recovery Crash Recovery automatically restores all opened pages after a crash happened. Save Page to Image Flexible and easy-to-use tool that converts html page from any URL to image. It captures the whole web page's content into JPG, BMP , GIF , PNG or TIFF on the fly. Quick Proxy Switcher Different internet connections do often require completely different proxy server settings and it's a real pain to change them manually. AD Blocker Blocks all forms of advertising, including Flash ads, rich media, fly-ins, slide-ins, pop-ups, pop-unders, spyware and adware ads, and messenger ads. Greasy monkey alike User Script IE7Pro Script is to Internet Explorer7 as Greasemonkey is to Firefox. It lets you remix the Web via scripts. Inline Search Adds the inline search bar like firefox has, finds as you type, use the F3 and Enter Key to cycle between multiple results, highlight all results. Spell Check IE7Pro Spell Check will check any text you enter and alert you to possible errors by adding a red underline to any potentially misspelled words.
