I've been looking into ways to get the most out of my dial-up connection. (I'm way back in the woods, so DSL or cable are out the question.) One possibility I've found is alternate web browsers such as Opera or Mozilla. Do any of you have any experience with these programs? Any knowledge would be appreciated...

they are both good, and both can block popups which I think will be helpful with a dial up.

Both are great, although Opera is generally more stable, and loads faster than mozilla. The only downside is the banner ads in the corner, although they're not that big of a deal, and you can always just pay for it.

Mozilla, on the other hand has tons of ad-ons, which do all kinds of cool things like gesture navigation and automatic image downloading.

I use moz myself.

I'm a big fan of Mozilla-Firebird...basically Mozilla toned down for browsing only, no email or newsgroups and stuff like that. Peppy little thing.

Big fan of opera too. Their dedication to linux is a big selling point for me.

I'm not sure if the other browsers will be any better over dial-up although they are good options compared to IE.

Have you looked into satellite Internet access from DirecTV?

I use Firebird as well, and love it. Quite slimmed down and no more popups

i like opera better, i even bought the newest vers. i like the all-windows-in-one effect, and looking at my e-mail in side my browser.

Snag both Opera & Firebird and see which you like better. Both will treat you well...

I did a little research on Direct TV high-speed, and from what I understand its expensive, complicated to set up, and not really suitable for gaming. Not that dial-up is suitable for gaming, but at least its affordable.

I'm using Mozilla right now. I really enjoy using it and don't have any problems with it.

mozilla firebird - unmatched security, built in pop-up blocking, tabbed dbrowsing. and it's fast

opera is much faster, but when i am doing heavy browsing on my cable modem, it can't keep up. on a dial-up modem you shouldn't notice

Just downloaded Firebird it's really growing on me. Been using Opera for about a year now too.
Browser extensions are great. Get the tab extensions and you have a nice Opera replacement.

Check out myIE2 or Slimbrowser.

Both are based on the IE rendering engine so you get good compatablility with all plugins, sites, etc. However, they add in tabbed browsing, popup blockers, and couple other goodies here and there. And to top it off they are much smaller and lack a lot of the bloat of IE so the speed increases.

If you like IE's rendering but don't like IE then I definitely suggest you give them a try. I'm currently using Slimbrowser but I like MyIE2 as well.
