New Sound Card for a Laptop?

We just bought a new Toshiba Laptop. It is going to also be used as a DVD player fo the kids on long trips. The only drawback is that the sound nevers gets loud. Even with headphones, it is just the right level, except in the car. With road noise, etc., it is hard for the kids to here it. I have all the levels as high as they go. Will a new sound card solve the problem? Any suggestions? I saw an external card when i searched Dealtime.com for about $65. Thanks ahead of time!!!

I'm pretty sure you're stuck with the onboard sound only.

There are some awesome pcmcia sound cards available, available, also you can get an amplifier that fits inline with the headphones from radioshack, or even amplified speakers.

If you have an USB port (new laptops do), you can try an external soundcard, the SB Extigy or the new SB MP3 thingy.

Forego the Extigy and get this bad-boy:

Based on the PCI Revolution. I have it in my Winders PC and it's fantastic. I plan on picking up the Sonica for my Tibook shortly.

Tinfoil, that is a nice piece of hardware, but I was looking for an inexpensive solution. Plus, my kids are still too young to enjoy the benefits of an awesome sound system. Thanks.

The extigy is a decent solution, and not that expensive anymore, but it's bulky so you cant really carry it with you.
