Ultimately - in order to communicate with a fax machine, you will need to use a dial up modem. Since fax machines do not connect to the internet or use IP they must be dialed to.

Places like efax probably have a bank of modems, and they get your fax via the software, and send it out to fax machines with their modems.

Since fax machines do not connect to the internet, I don't see how there could be software written to send faxes through cable to fax machines.

Looked on google myself and found this http://www.savetz.com/fax/

I'm not sure exactly what your needs are, but there are many free services that might suit them...

Has anyone tried efax? Is it pretty reliable? I'm going to be job hunting soon and it would be nice if I could avoid 20 trips to kinko's to use their fax machine.

Remote Printer - it's an amazing service which will turn an email into a fax for you (for free). I've used it a number of times over here in the UK and it definitely works.

If you want to send something more complicated than plain text, check out the 'client software' section.
