My girlfriend's computer is missing the file "msinfo32.exe." As you probably know, this is a fairly vital component of a windows operating system, as it is a direct access point to win.ini, sys.ini, and (in my case, most importantly) the list of programs that come up when one starts one's computer up. Can anyone direct me to a site or something that has this file? If not, can you advise me how to get to the list of startup programs (not just the "Programs>Startup"). Thanks much!

You can go to Start, then Run and type in msconfig. That'll bring up a box that tells ya tons of info about the system. Under the "Startup" tab, programs that start when the computer starts are listed. You can check and uncheck them if you want them to start or not start with the loading of Windows.

I know this is how it's done in Windows XP, but I'm not sure about previous versions.

It's done the same way for all previous versions of Windows EXCEPT Windows 2000. For some reason, they excluded it from 2000. There are some third party progs for Win 2000 which do the same thing that msconfig does. I think (not absolutely sure) that the Win XP version of MSCOnfig will work in 2000 as well, although I haven't tried it myself.

If yo uare using 2000, install spybot search and destroy. Not only should you have it running anyway, it has a screen in it that gives you acces to the startup list, with the ability to turn it on and off. I use it - It's very useful.

BTW, what OS are you using? Let us know so we can get the right file and I'm sure someone on here (I'll happily do it if you've got 2k) will send it to you.

I've mentioned this before but I use this startup control panel program http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml I find that it is small and is faster to find those hidden startup items in the registry.

thanks for the msinfo... never knew it existed...(i find everthing else) msconfig is the one i used... or when the computer just booted, do crtlaltdelete to check whats opened.
