Conundrum: Installing java with Firefox

I seem to remember that this was a problem with really old versions of mozilla as well,

I have the J2SDK1.4.2-b28 installted, and I don't want to reinstall it (I have a bunch of altered libraries etc)

I recently installed the rather marvellous Firefox, but the Java plug-in doesn't seem to work. Do I need to install *anothrt* JRE?

Thanks
