Are all my folders supposed to be read-only?

I was checking out properties of my folders on my computer the other day and noticed they were all read-only. Are they supposed to be all read-only? I'm using winxp pro btw. If not, is there a way to turn it off? I tried unchecking the read-only box but it just reverts to read-only. What gives?

Maybe there is an application that you are using that accesses them and is somehow changing them to read-only when it has accessed them (for some weird reason). Could you provide more details?

Is it a "grey" check in that box? I have that as well, and it's actually a sibling-child-parent relation to security. Not a big deal and is standard in Win2K and XP. Nothing to be concerned with unless it actually PREVENTS you from writing to the folder, which it shouldn't.

While it is a funky design decision, a folder's read-only attribute is used for folder customization & such and should not affect the write permissions of enclosed files unless the app is looking in the wrong place. Explorer (the desktop) should still delete & modify without problems. The effect can be different with some networking products but for local volumes it shouldn't cause any problems.

MS has an article on the topic:
