Idiot Move : Home/Work/Small Networking

Small crisis at work this morning, we lost a printer .. No problem, I thought, net gear fast eth. switch, can just print off my cubical neighbor. So I go to network places, "set up a home or office network" (win xp pro). So before I know it I have a small network on my laptop! But, my neighbor keeps the printer, and sets up his network same way! I need to "delete" this thing I set up, and connect to his.. Wherever I go my laptop is now on this stupid MSHome network, I can't even get on the one at my place to print off the tower..

is your switch running DHCP and assigning IP's? if so, did you do a ipconfig /renew?

or try making a "new" connection and use your old settings...

I had no old settings, at my place, it would automatically fall into the network. Maybe I did have settings, but I set all this up over a year ago, so its hard to remember.

if you didn't have to set anything up, it's most likely a DHCP p2p configuration.

you could get the settings from your neighbor to get back on the network. or just call your IT staff and prepare to apologize a little... :-)

... All my neighbor did was go into network places and hit set up a small home or office network, don't know where to find the settings for that?

And there is no IT staff! Its horrible, I am the most "advanced" person here believe it or not and solve most of the problems...

on XP,

"My Network Places" is where you'd set it up.

the links on the left side panels will have what you're looking for.

Right now for example I am home.
My tower has its own network with wireless and a printer..

My my laptop has its OWN network and it won't go on the tower network and I need to access the printer , it picks up wireless fine

you have to change the workgroup name on your PC to the workgroup you want to connect to.

(I'm on a 2000 machine right now, so I can't see exactly where it is in XP...) but right click my computer, network identification, or computer name, and change the workgroup name.

is that the answer you're looking for? hehhe
