Windows XP SP2 and WMP 9
Alright, this just makes me mad. So, I've intentionally not installed WMP 9 for various reasons, and just recently, like a good computer user, I installed Service Pack 2 on my Windows XP installation. Apparently, however, Windows Media Player 9 is installed along with Service Pack 2. This is something I did not know. I can't for the life of me think of an explanation as to why upgrading to WMP9 would be so critical that it's included in SP2.
Clearly, I can't uninstall SP2. I prefer to not be attacked with worms when I happen to be in Windows However, I do NOT want WMP9. Does anyone know a way for me to uninstall 9 and replace it with WMP8? I eralize that uninstalling a program is a lot to ask from a Microsoft product, but I've got to ask. Hopefully there's some way to hack around and get WMP8 back ![]()

removing wmp9
Go to START --> SETTINGS --> CONTROL PANEL. Double click on ADD / REMOVE PROGRAMS. On the left side of the a/r programs window you will see something that says ADD / REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS. There you will see WMP and just uncheck it to remove it, or most of it at least.

Theoretically.......
You should be able to wait until SP2 is up on the automatic updates site. Then unistall SP2, assuming you had it do the backup thing. Then just install the necessary components from the autoupdate page. MS always throws the latest and greatest shit in the service packs. That way everyone get all the "cool shit" at the same time. |

if you want to remove SP2
If you're just looking to remove SP2, just browse to the folder:
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ You will have to unhide the folder if you can't natively see it.
