My windows media player executable continues to run in the background process system. Only reason I can think of why is because it may be updating? However, when I play a video or sound if you will then close it, it will close the program up, but continue running in the background process playing the sound of the video or file. Unless you end/kill the process, it will not stop. I've dinked around with the tools/preferences selection quite a bit, even disabled "update windows media player automatically" functions and it continues to do this. I've even reinstalled windows media player from the windows components section. I've already tried to reinstall windows media player 10 from microsoft's site as well and no avail. Any further suggestions?

That is really weird. Do you have the WMP media bar enabled? Right-click the taskbar, go to toolbars and make sure Windows Media Player is unchecked.

Yeah that is really odd, you might want to try looking for adware/spyware and viruses... cause thats not normal heh. Also have you ever tried windows media player classic? Its real nice... I use it for all my stuff, doesnt use as much memory and is nice and simple.

yeah.. i've used media player classic, but i've always liked microsoft's new utilities because the always ran just fine for me and required very little cpu processing in the background. as for some of your guys' questions.. i already had media bar disabled and checked for virus' and spyware. my computer is completely cleaned out. not a single spyware on here or virus. my guess i found a windows os glitch. knowing me, i'll prolly end up being the one to find the problem. if anyone else has any more suggestions please let me know, this damn thing is so annoying, heh.

one additional problem i've noticed windows media player 10 doing lately is change it's default file types on the ie browsers. instead of by default playing windows player, it changes itself over to quicktime. now, i go back and do an open with, with the files and default it back to windows player and eventually it swaps back on over... weeeeird. ugh. lmao, it's just one thing after another.

p.s.- i like windows media classic, just not it's graphical interface, lol ><

I've had a similar problem.

I had to uninstall wmp 10. In the add/remove dialogue you can check the box at the top that says 'show updates' and then scroll down, it should be there. I then had to run some sort of registry cleaner to clear out all the shit the uninstaller left behind. Reboot and then re-install WMP 10. That seemed to fix it for me.

Note: I had a WMP entry and an update entry. I got rid of them both.

By the way, I think it is some glitch in the OS as I had the exact same problem with my bit torrent client. I had to uninstall, clean out the registry, reboot and then re-install to get it to finally stop.
