cURL??

I'm trying to query a mysql database on a secure ssl server from an unsecure server, I have been told to use cURL, I have never heard of this and have no idea how to implement it using php, any help will get my eternal gratitude in return

PHP: CURL, Client URL Library Functions

Processing Payments with CURL Tutorial.

Remember, you have to have support compiled in to use (or have it loaded through a PHP extension). Use phpinfo() to determine if it is.

cURL is very useful in some situations. But as trache said. You MUST have it compiled in order to use it. So before you code, make sure you check and see if it is compiled on your hosts server.
